Signalization Activities

Belgede ANNUAL REPORT (sayfa 149-153)

Repair, Maintenance and Management of Signalization Systems

These activities include the maintenance and repair activities for ensuring the permanence of the current signalization system city- wide and repairing the hardware malfunctions as well as program development activities that ensure the system operates as a whole in a synchronized manner.

In scope of repair, maintenance and revision activities of all the signalized junctions city-wide conducted in 2012 activity year, 24 junctions were removed as per UKOME resolution and signalized junctions city-wide were repaired, maintained and managed.

Signalized Junction Production

In order to regulate vehicle and pedestrian movement and increase safety therefore on the main artery roads city-wide, signalization is installed on junctions. In order to signalize the traffic of Istanbul, many different signal control techniques such as fixed time signal management, complete traffic applied signal management, adaptive signal management, green wave coordination, tram priority, etc. and most advanced techniques in signal optimization area. To prevent unnecessary

interruption of main road flow, detectors called “Loop Use of Alternative Energy Sources

Signalization Maintenance and Repair Work, 2013

Detector” are placed to the connection roads at signalized junctions. By means of these sensors, signal times can be adjusted automatically depending on the presence of vehicles on the connection road. Another application that prevents unnecessary interruption and time loss is pedestrian buttons.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality will sustain its activities towards expanding this and similar signalized junction management techniques. In the scope of the activities carried out in 2013, 132 new signalized junction were generated and number of total active signalized junctions reached to 1,971.

With an environmentally conscious understanding of management, we turn towards alternative energy sources for the utilization of traffic and road related devices in the city.

Our aim is to develop a culture that does not jeopardize environment and human health in terms of energy generation by using renewable sources, set an example in this respect and support the development of this sector in our country.

Where available, solar energy is used as an alternative energy source for signalization, flasher, traffic measurement detectors, meteorology observation sensors and cameras.

Horizontal and Vertical Traffic Sign Activities;

It is aimed to ensure life and property safety of drivers, passengers and pedestrians by marking the traffic rules regulating the movements of drivers and pedestrians on the roads with horizontal and vertical traffic signs.

Horizontal Traffic Sign Activities (Line)

It covers horizontal traffic sign activities carried out for the purpose of ensuring Traffic and Road Safety. Horizontal Traffic Signs consist of lane and banquet lines and zebra, pelican crossings, arrows, written messages, offsets, rumble strips, reflective road studs, etc. In line with implementation standards, horizontal signs made of Two Component and Cold Road Paints and Thermoplastic Paint are applied in seasons

excluding winter by considering seasonal conditions. Ready Symbol Applications

Thermoplastic Horizontal Traffic Sign Application, 2013

Horizontal Traffic Signs with Double Component Paint

Markings with Double Component paint consist of zebra and pelican pedestrian crossing lines, arrows, written messages, offset, decelerators and similar traffic signs. Horizontal Traffic Signs were applied using 116,055 m2 of double component paint in 2013.

Double Component Horizontal Traffic Sign Application, 2013

Ready symbol application is a horizontal sign method that covers arrow, offset, writing and similar horizontal marking symbols and all vertical traffic signs, composed of thermoplastic and used by applying on road surface after heating.

By means of this method, it is aimed to maximize traffic and road safety by enriching horizontal traffic signs made by thermoplastic and double competent paints using vertical traffic signs and symbols. 1,703 ready symbol applications were implemented in 2013 activity period.

Horizontal Sign Example made with Ready Symbol, 2013

Horizontal Traffic Signs with Thermoplastic and Chlorine Rubber Paint

Signs generated using thermoplastic and chlorine rubber paint on the road network consists of lane and verge lines.

Horizontal traffic marking was carried out using 899,453 m2 of thermoplastic paint throughout Istanbul in 2013. In the same period, 113,015 m2 of chlorine rubber paint application was carried out around the city.

Vertical Traffic Si gn Act ivi t ie s ;

Vertical Traffic Signs; are indications of rules the pedestrians have to comply with on the network used as well as the signs applies with the aim of steering and informing.

Vertical traffic signs consist of warning signs, regulatory signs and information signs.

Besides, road safety systems such as Safety Barriers, Solar Energy Flashers and Flexible Cylinders, Reflective Road Studs and Glass Fibre Reinforced Polyester are used in the interchanges of main artery roads in order to maximize traffic and road safety.

Activities performed in this scope:

a. Over-Coating Traffic Sign Application,

b. Inner Junction Direction Information Sign Application, c. Standard Traffic Signs Application,

d. LED Standard Traffic Sign Applications, e. Road Button Applications,

f. Safety Barriers Applications, g. CTP Applications,

h. Flexible Cylinder Applications.

Safe School Zone Project

In order to minimize possible dangers that our children who are our future can encounter in school entries and exits, a new concept including special new horizontal and vertical traffic signs and road safety items in school zones was created.

Therefore, it is targeted to actively inform the drivers oncoming towards school zone and ensure maximum road and traffic safety.

Safe School Area, 2013

When the reasons of traffic accidents are studied, the reasons are observed to be originating from human error 95% of a time, which reveals a serious deficiency in Traffic Training.

Therefore, With an intention to raise generations attentive to traffic rules, and consistent and conscious in abiding by these rules, traffic trainings are given to 8-14 age group students in elementary schools affiliated to Ministry of National Education as well as to requesting nongovernmental organizations and public institutions in Traffic Training Parks and Mobile Training Buses.

Traffic Trainings

The traffic parks established in areas closed to traffic in scope of related regulations and standards so as to provide maximum efficiency of training activities in place and offer a measurable high quality training service include Training Track consisting of Horizontal-Vertical Traffic Signs, Signalization Systems, Crosswalks, Level Crossing and Sidewalks; classroom and laboratories.

General and Special Traffic Training Activities

Traffic Training Book, Traffic Coloring Book, Traffic Training Set, Traffic Signs Board, Traffic Training Brochures and similar training documents are prepared and reproduced to be disseminated to students receiving education and schools.

Traffic Training Set, 2013

In addition, children are provided with a more entertained way of increasing their traffic knowledge and skills and obeying the rules is made a behavior by means of “Traffic Labyrinth” initiated in 2012.
