•In most animal tissues,

glucose is destroyed in the

path of energy until pyruvate.

Glucose 6-phosphate may be incorporated in many ways

according to the needs in the cells. In some tissues, NADPH is formed when glucose is

converted to 6-phosphate

pentose phosphates.

• This pathway is called the

pentose phosphate pathway,

the phosphogluconate pathway or the hexose monophosphate pathway.

• Bu yol, hızla bölünen hücreler (kemik iliği, cilt barsak

mukozası ve tümörler gibi),

pentoz 5-fosfatı,

(14)

•In this pathway, rapidly

dividing cells (such as bone marrow, skin intestinal

mucosa and tumors) use the

pentose 5-phosphate structure of RNA, DNA, ATP, NADH,

FADH2 and coenzymes such

as coenzyme A.

(15)

• The other product of this path, NADPH, is used in fatty acid

synthesizing tissues such as liver, adipose tissue and the mammary gland in the

breastfeeding period. Adrenal glands, gonads and liver tissues that perform the synthesis of

active cholesterol and steroid

hormones, are also use this path.

(16)

• This route is also used in cells that are directly exposed to

oxygen, such as erythrocytes, corneal cells, eye lenses, or in free radical damage forms.

• The results of the genetic

deficiency of the first enzyme of

this pathway, namely glucose 6-

phosphate dehydrogenase, are

also very important.

(17)

•The pentose phosphate

pathway takes place in two

stages. In the oxidative phase, NADPH works by reducing

glutathione to GSSG.

(18)

•Two different

monosaccharides are formed in total 10 different carbon

numbers during the non- oxidative phase with

transaldolase and

transketolase enzymes.

(19)

• For example; ribose 5-phosphate + xylose 5-phosphate or

sedoheptilose 7-phosphate +

glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate
