Glycerophospholipids are membrane lipids and form ester bonds between the first and second carbon of the glycerol and the fatty acids.

It is bound to the third carbon of glycerol with a polar or charged group of phosphodiester.

Glycerophospholipid may contain a chiral center in this case.

Phosphatidic acid derivatives are named according to the alcohol present in the head region, for example;

If the third C-bound group is -H, as phosphatidic acid,

Phosphatidylethanolamine, if ethanolamine is bound

Phosphatidylserine, if serine bound

Phosphatidylglycerol, if glycerol is bound

Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-biphosphate is if myo-inositol 4,5 bound

Some animal tissues and unicellular organisms are rich in ether lipids, such as heart tissue (about half are plasmogenic)

Plasmogogens contain double bonds between C-1 and C-2, although its functional significance is not known, it can be thought of as protecting the membrane against the effects of phospholipases.

One of the ether lipids is a platelet-activating factor, a strong signaling molecule that triggers platelet aggregation from leukocytes and serotonin release from platelets.

Galactolipids, usually found in plant cells, contain one or two galactose.

Galactolipids are found in the tilakoit membranes of chloroplasts.

The plant membranes also contain sulfolipids.

Ether lipids are also available in archaea living in extreme conditions such a high temperature, low pH, high ionic load

(23)

It is formed by branching of fatty acids at both ends of glycerol and provides resistance to extreme conditions
