BIOCHEMISTRY I
II. WEEK
LECTURE CONTENTS OF SECOND WEEK
• To detailing the concept of stereoisomerism in order to understand and define the three-dimensional structure of molecules
• Biochemical importance of the subject will be
discussed in accordance with the students' knowledge
of organic chemistry.
• Bonds especially covalent bonds and functional groups are particularly important for the functions of biomolecules.
• In biochemistry, functional groups of molecules are important in determining their three-dimensional structures which means their location in space.
• Stereochemical properties of these carbon-containing
compounds are important for their function.
• Three-dimensional interactions of biomolecules determine their roles.
• Stereosensitivity is important in interactions between biomolecules.
• This part will be detailed in the course and various
examples will be given.

• Stereochemical representation of simple molecules will be written three different types.
• The role of chiral centers will be discussed in the
regulation of bonds and substitution groups limiting the return of configuration.
• Examples of geometric and cis-trans isomers will be
given and biochemical differences will be detailed

• The importance of molecular asymmetry, chiral and
achiral molecules, enantiomers and diastereomers in
biochemistry will be explained through formulas.
CHEMİCAL BONDS EFFECTİVE İN FORMATİON OF MACROMOLECULES :
• Intramolecular and intermolecular chemical bonds;
strong and weak bonds; disulfide bridges, hydrogen
bonds, hydrophobic relations etc. will DISCUSSED
• weak interactions in aqueous systems,
• Hydrogen bonding as an electrostatic attraction between the oxygen atom of a water molecule and the hydrogen atom of the other water molecule,
• Hydrophobic interactions that hold together
hydrophobic regions of molecules,
• Amphipathic compounds containing polar or charged and non-polar regions,
• The weak attraction forces (van der Waals interactions) formed with dipole when two uncharged atoms
approach each other,
• Ionic interactions between charged groups
• These are the topics to be discussed in his week.
• Questions will be asked at the end of the course and wanted to discuss for the following week.
• The questions asked in the previous week will be
evaluated.
