ADHESION
MOLECULES
Selectins
leukocyte-endothelium and platelet endothelium adhesion
The early stage of the inflammatory response
• The selectins bind to the carbohydrate part of glycoproteins present on the surface of other cells with lectin tips.
• This attachment is a calcium dependent event.
• The major ligand of the selectins are sialyl Lewis X (sLEx) and sialyl Lewis A, found on CD15 and some other cell surface molecules.
• Major members of the Selectin family L-selectin
P-selectin E-selectin
L-selectins
found on the surface of some
lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes and other myeloid cells.
E-selectins
connect to sLEX sugars associated with surface glycoproteins such as CD15 on the surface of monocytes,
macrophages and granulocyte
allow the leukocytes to loosely attach to the endothelium
P-selectins
found in the membrane of dense
granules in platelets and in the Weibel- Palade bodies in endothelial cells.
