SUMMARY
Rousseau and the political role of the foreign writer
The question of the reception of Rousseau in Turkey brings us to question the way he con- ceived the role of his writings concerning “foreign” nations. Considering the principles as well as their execution, the foreign thinker has to be aware of his limits, which lay in his lack of inti- mate knowledge of the country. His cautiousness is the reverse of an energetic action that falls at first to the citizens, moved and united by patriotism. In it, the position of Rousseau is contrary to that of European and cosmopolitical philosophers as upholders of a transnational public opinion.

L a question de la réception de Rousseau en Turquie peut nous amener à nous interroger, en retour, sur la façon dont celui-ci a conçu le rôle de ses écrits vis- à-vis des nations « étrangères » qui voulaient s’instituer en corps politique. Ce problème apparaît dans les Considérations sur le gouvernement de Pologne de 1772 sur lesquelles nous nous pencherons particulièrement ici. La distinction du soi et de l’étranger est constitutive de l’espace politique, elle apparaît aussi lorsqu’il s’agit de penser le rôle de l’écrivain qui traite de ces questions. Nous souhaiterions ici envisager Rousseau comme
« écrivain étranger », en prenant ces deux termes au sérieux et nous demandant en quoi
