Amacı / Purpose Bu ders, modern edebiyat dönemde (1900-1960) sosyal, kültürel ve tarihi olayların İngiliz Edebiyatı’na yansımalarını kısaca inceledikten sonra seçilen eserlerde, dönemin estetik değerlerini tartışırken, sınıfsal, etnik, toplumsal cinsiyetle gibi belli konulara yer vererek yazarın stilini de içeren estetik bir incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu ders kapsamındaki romanlar edebi eleştiri yöntemleriyle birlikte dönemi şekillendiren tarihi, ulusal ve sosyal zemine uygun olarak incelenecektir.

This course attempts to analyze how Britain and Britishness were subject to change from 1900-1960, and it aims to examine to what extent this is reflected in literature. It also aims to define the aesthetic mood of the period; and examine issues of class, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity and age in the fiction of the time. Through the discussions, the selected works from the period will be placed in critical contexts and in the significant historical factors that determined the shape of the culture and the nation of post-war era. Students will be able to: assess the narrative techniques of post-war fiction, perceive the cultural conflicts of the period, situate the texts in terms of class, gender and ethic issues, and apply appropriate theory with their own interpretative input and reading to the selected works.

İçeriği / Content Dersin kapsamındaki döneme ait eserler eleştirel, teorik ve tarihsel detaylara dayandırılacaktır. Dersler sunum ve tartışmalardan oluşmaktadır. Ders; roman dışında konuyla ilgili makale, kitap, film ve belgesellerle desteklenecek ve zenginleştirilecektir.

The texts will be studied in detail with literary-critical and more generally theoretical- historical material. Specific questions about the social, political and cultural context of post-war Britain will be raised throughout the term. The course will consist of both lectures and discussions. Moreover, the students will be assigned to read various articles on the selected works of post-war period
