Alphonse De Lamartine’in 1833 tarihini ta şıyan bu satırları kuşkusuz şehirler şehri İstan bul’un tüm güzelliğini aksettirmeyebilir.
Fa tih Sultan Mehmed’in şehri rüya renkleriyle uza nıp gider.»
«After a few strokes of the rows we have reached such a point on the sea that all Gol den Horn, Bosphorus and Marmara Sea, and the whole harbour and the interior of Istan bul could be seen from that point. But, as one reached this point the • Marmara Sea, Asian shore, and Bosphorus were all forgotten, and so did we: We all dedicated ourselves to watching the entrance pond of the Golden Horn, the seven cities hanging on the seven hills of Istan bul... The seven hills of the city were all flowing towards the Golden Horn, a branch of the sea... Istanbul, so uniquely and incomparably beauti ful...»
These lines created by Alphonse De Lamar tine in 1833 may of course not reflect all the beauties of Istanbul the Queen of the Cities. Lamartine, who put forward that «No painter’s brush can ever illustrate this place completely», did continuously emphasized that he is unable to «express this beauty» in his works relevant to Istanbul.
The very end point of the migration travel of the Megarian immigrants who had left their home in order to seek a new one, was Saraybur- nu. This tiny settlement of Byzans from Tracian root would afterwards be called as Byzas under inspiration from his name, and then be known as Byzantion. According to Plinos, the very first name of Istanbul was Lygos. Established in 660 BC, Byzantion was called under this name until the Roman Emperor Constantinus the Great.

Roman Emperor Septimus Severus who con quered Istanbul in 11th century AD. named her as «Agusta Antonina». This name would, however, be not adopted and immediately fol lowed by «Nea Roma» (New Rome). Accom panied by these changes in identity were the ur ban variations in urban structure and economical appearance in Istanbul.
The French author Theophile Gautier is too one of those who show a unique symphaty to wards Istanbul. Yet Gautier does not hesitate to express the dislikes he developed regarding certain facts about Istanbul, either. But generally he is also in love with Istanbul.
«The boats were moving around leaving traces behind them. Especially on the opposite side the fascinating panorama of Istanbul was lying. This view was so strange to mind that, one could even consider this to be unreal. One could suppose that this view lying before him was a decorative painting created from the phantasies of the painter illustrating an imaginary Oriantal appearance. The city of Mehmet the Conqueror is there, exhibiting all her colours as if a dream animation.
We must essentially mention that Theophile Gautier who saw Istanbul «with the colours of a dream», described her as «a fascinating pano rama» is no ordinary author. It is no other cause that provided Gautier with a word of mystery, a vast point of view, but the fact of Istanbul... And is it not this fact that makes Istanbul the Queen of the cities?
