By N E C D E T S A K A O Ğ L UOsmanlı padişahları İstan bul’un fethinden saltanatın kaldırılışına değin çok gör kemli törenlerle her cuma günü, saraydan çıkıp bü yük camilerden birine cu ma namazına gitme gele neğini sürdürdüler. “Selâmlık resm-i âlisi”, “cuma alayı” da denilen bu törenler vesilesiyle İstanbul bayram havası yaşar, halk, padişahı ve
onun mevkib-i hümâyûnunu (tören korteji) görmek için, sarayla cami arasındaki güzergâhı doldururdu. Bazı kişiler padişah-halifeyi görmenin sevap olduğuna inan dığı için, bazıları dilekte bulunmak için, çoğunluk ise meraktan yollara dökülürdü. Cuma selâmlığı başlamaz dan önce “sarık alayı” düzenlenir; bir Enderun ekibi, padişahın sorguçlu sarığını, saraydan o gün namaz kıla cağı camiye götürürdü. Böylece halk, cuma selâmlığının hangi camide yapılacağını öğrenirdi. Önceleri Ayasofya, Bayezid, Fatih, Süleymaniye, Sultanahmed Camilerinde yapılan cuma selâmlıkları, 19. yüzyılda Beşiktaş ve Ortaköy Camilerinde, II. Abdülhamid döneminde de Yıldız Sarayı’nın önündeki Hamidiye Camii’nde yapılır dı. Abdülhamid’in selâmlık törenlerine, Arnavut, Arap, Çerkez muhafız birlikleri de özel üniformalarıyla katılır lardı. Önceki padişahlar, bu törene at sırtında katılırken Abdülhamid, daha güvenli bulduğu saltanat arabasını
tercih etmekteydi. •
From the conquest o f İstan bul until the dissolution o f the monarchy, the Ottoman sultans appeared in public every F riday w hen they m ade their way to one o f Ista n b u l's m osques in a m agnificent procession o f palace guards, officials and a tte n d a n ts know n as the Cum a Selam lığı. These Friday processions were fes tive occasions, a n d large crowds would gather to watch the splendid cortege pass by. While most were there from pure curiosity, others wanted the opportunity to give petitions to the sultan. Early each Friday morning the Selamlık was preceded by the Turban Procession. A group o f attendants from the palace carried the royal turban from the palace to the mosque where the su lta n w ould p ra y that day, a n d served as a p u b lic announcement o f bis destination. In earlier centuries, it was customary fo r the sultan to attend Friday noon prayers a t the m osques o f H agia Sophia, B a ye zid , Fatih, Süleymaniye or Sultanahmed. However in the 19th century, when the sultans moved to new palaces on the northern shore o f the Golden Horn, the Friday procession was gener ally held at the mosques o f Beşiktaş or Ortaköy, and during the reign o f Sultan Abdülhamid II at Hâmidiye Mosque. Abdülhamid II abandoned the custom o f attending Friday prayers on horseback, travelling instead by carriage which
he considered safer. •
