Kapalıçarşı'mn Beyazıt giriş kapışma sırtını dönenler Beyazıt Camii'ne doğru baktıklannda karşılanna gelen büfe, dö- nerci, ayakkabıcı, çantacı, elbiseci dük- kanlanmn curcunasının arkasında yan ya na kubbeli iki yapı görürler. Kapalıçar- şı'nın kendine has kalabalığı, ticari ve tu ristik avıltılan, trafik karmaşası arasında gizli bir mekan kabul edilebilecek bu kubbeli yapılardan soldaki, Hakkı Tank Us Kütüphanesidir. Bina, Beyazıt Camii Külliyesi müştemilatından Sibyan Mekte bi olarak 16. yüzyıl başında inşa edilmiş tir. 1507 yılında öğrencilere ders verecek bir müderrisin tayin edildiği belgelerden
anlaşıldığına göre yapımının bu tarihten önce olması gerekir. 1960 yılında Vakıflar İdaresi tarafından restore edilmiş ve Hakkı Tank Us Kütüphanesi olarak kullanılmak şartıyla Us'un adını taşıyan özel vakfa tahsis edilmiştir. 21 Ekim 1965 yılında hizmete açılan kütüphane, gazeteci/yazar Hakkı Tank Us'un vasiyeti gereği topla dığı kitap ve dergilerden oluşur. Vakıf sahibinin adını taşıyan bu kütüphane Osmanlı basın tarihine ait çok önemli kaynaklan bün yesinde bulundurduğu için dünya çapında bir öneme sahiptir.
1889 yılında Manisa/Gördes'te doğan Hakkı Tank Us hayatında hiç büyük harf kullanmamış ve büyük harf kullanılmasına karşı çıkmıştır. Bu nedenle Türk basınında "Miniskül Hakkı11 lakabıyla anılan Hakkı Tank Us'un sibyan mektebinin
duvanna asılan ve son zamanlara kadar du ran kütüphane tabelası bu özelliği bilen dostlannın çabalanyla miniskül harflerden oluşturulmuştu. Uzun yıllar Matbuat Cemi- yeti'nin ve İstanbul Basın Birliği'nin başkan lığını yapan Hakkı Tank Bey pek çok eski edebiyatçı, yayıma ile ilişki kurmuş, onlann yayınlarını tek tek toplamış, çıkardıklan der gi ve gazeteleri bir araya getirerek çok önem li bir koleksiyon oluşturmuştur.
Türk basın tarihinde çok önemli bir yere sahip Vakit gazetesini Ahmed Emin Yalman, Hakkı Tank Us, kardeşleri Mehmet Asım Us ve Haşan Rasim Us'la birlikte kurdu. Tank Us, Cağaloğlu'nda Vakit Yurdu adını verdiği binasında topladığı dergi ve kitaplannı ölü münden sonra halka açık bir kütüphane ya pılmasını vasiyet etti. 1923-1939 yılları ara sında dört dönem Giresun milletvekili ola rak görev yapan Hakkı Tank Us Türk basın tarihine bağışladığı kütüphane dışında unu tulmaz hizmetler yapmıştır. Yaşlı ve unutul muş olan basın emekçilerini "50. Yıl -Yazı Hayatında Elli Yılını Dolduranların Jübilesi" adı altında toplantılar yaparak tanıtmıştır. Bu
If you turn your back to the Beyazıt Gate o f the Kapalıçarş i and face the Beyazıt Mos que, beyond the chaos o f sandwich, shoes, bags and clothes shops you will notice a structure with twin domes. The left dome o f the structure which seems like a safe haven among the crowds, the touristic and com mercial hustle and bustle and chaotic traffic o f the Kapahçarşı, houses a library know as the Hakkı Tank Us Library. It was built at the beginning o f the 16th Century as an in fant school as a part o f the Beyazıt Mosque Complex. According to a document a teac her was appointed to the school indicating that the place must have been built before that date. It was restored in 1960 by the Vakıflar İdaresi (General Di rectorate o f Public Foundations) and allocated to the Hakkı Tank Us Foundation. Opened to public on 21st o f October, 1965, in accordan ce to Tank Us’s will, the libraray houses the periodicals and books he has collected during his life. The collection is o f universal importance as it contains very valuable information on Ottoman press history.
Hakkı Tank Us was born in 1889 at Gördes town near Manisa, a town on the Aegean fam ous fo r its carpets. He was fam ous fo r his op position to the use o f capital letters, and he personally never used them. He was thus appropriately nicknamed "the miniscule". Conse quently the sign post bearing his name which stood outside the library was written in small letters as a result o f his friends efforts. Mr. Us was the president o f the Press Society and Union o f Istanbul Press fo r many years. He was in touch with many aut hors and publishers meticiluously collecting their works and daily papers, weekly, monthly or any other periodicals, consequently forming a huge collection. He recieved great appreciati on from all circles fo r his efforts to support the needy members o f the literature world.
Tank Us’s yet another success was the foun dation o f the Vakit daily which had a very im portant role in the Turkish Press, along with his two brothers Mehmet A sm Us ve Hasan Rasim and eminent journalist Ahmet Emin Yalman. He classified and stored his collection in a building at Cağaloğlu named the Vakit House. It was his will that his collection be ma de public in a library under his name. He ser ved as a Member o f the Parliament, represen ting the Giresun county. Another great service o f his was the care he gave to elderly and neg lected members o f the press. He would organi ze special occasions under the name o f "50th year-jubilee o f Fifty Years in Letters" and ha ve those authors remembered. He published

toplantıların bugün için çok önemli bir başvuru kitabı sayılan ki- tapçıklannı yayınlatmış, eski birçok edebiyatçıyı, yazan unutul maktan kurtarmıştır.
Dünya çapında bu koleksiyon Hakkı Tank Bey'in 21 Ekim 1956 tarihinde vefatından sonra uzun zaman sahibi olduğu Vakit Yurdu binasında tutulmuştur. Başta gazeteci-yayıncı Ziyad Ebüzziya Bey olmak üzere kardeş ve arkadaşlanmn çabalan sonucu vakıf bir kü tüphane oluşturulmuştur. 20 bin parçadan meydana gelen kolek siyonda 178 adet yazma eser vardır. Çoğunluğu eski harfli eserler den oluşan bu koleksiyon bir ihtisas kütüphanesi olup banndırdı- ğı süreli yayınlar ile ünlüdür. Osmanlmın hükümran olduğu coğ rafya üzerinde çıkmış pek çok süreli yayın Hakkı Tank Us'un özel gayreti sonucu bu kütüphanede bir araya getirilmiştir. Dünyanın pek çok yerinden araştırmacılar Hakkı Tank Us Kütüphanesinden yararlanmak üzere buraya gelmekteydiler. Eser adına göre fiş kata logu hazırlanmış olan kütüphanenin fişlerinin hazırlanmasında Sı- dıka Karadeniz Ha
nimin ve ünlü kitabi- yatçımız Seyfettin Ûzege'nin emekleri büyüktür. Seyfettin Özeğe Osmanlı basın tarihinin bir abidesi sayılan beş ciltlik "Es ki Harflerle Basılmış Türkçe Eserler" isimli dev katalogunu hazır larken bu kütüphane de çalışmıştır. Mer hum Seyfettin Özeğe, kütüphanenin açıldı ğı tarihten ölümüne kadar her hafta Cuma günleri Hakkı Tank Us Kütüphanesi'nde bulunur, hem kütüp hane için, hem de kendi katalogu için çalışmalarda bulu nurdu. ulaşmasında büyük emekleri olan insanların başında gelenlerden dir. Kütüphanede onun yaptığı fişlerden, tasniften yararlanılarak hizmet veriliyordu.
Günümüzde Hakkı Tank Us Kütüphanesi içler acısı bir durum dadır. Tek personelle hizmet vermeye çalışan bu kurum çağdaş kütüphanecilik gereklerini yerine getirememekte kapalı olarak durmaktadır. Kurulduğu tarihte tayin edilen görevlisi 1990 yılın da ölünce oğlu bu görevi belli bir zaman fahri olarak devam ettir miştir. Muhatap alınacak bir görevlisi bulunmayan ve kapalı ola rak duran bu kütüphane içindeki dünya çapında koleksiyonlar çü rümeye bırakılmış bir vaziyettedir. 17 Ağustos depremi sonrası İs tanbul kütüphanelerinin yandan fazlası kullanılamaz duruma gel miş olması Hakkı Tank Us Kütüphanesi işlevini ve önemini birkaç kez daha artırmıştır. Ne yazık ki bu içler acı duruma müdahale edecek bir vatan evladı veya kuruluş bulunmamakta, dolayısıyla kültürümüzle ilgili bir hâzineden yararlanılamamaktadır. ■

Tank Us’s collection o f universal importance was kept fo r a long time at the Vakit House at (jagaloglu which he owned, after his de ath on 21st o f October, 1956 in Istanbul. A group o f people headed by author/joumalist Ziyad Ebuzziya, Hakki Tank Us’s brothers and close friends, the Hakki Tank Us Foundation eventually succeded in forming a library to his name. The collection consisted o f 20,000 pi eces 178 o f which were hand written. Mostly in Ottoman script, it is a specialized library and better known fo r its periodicals. Periodicals published in all lands under the sovereignity o f the Ottoman Empire have been brought together in his collection with his special personal efforts. Many researchers used to come from all around the world to make use o f this rich periodicals library and other b o o k s. One must note the valuable efforts o f Mme. Sidika Karadeniz who indexed the contents o f the library and fam ous Turkish bibliographer Seyfet- tin Ozege. Mr. Ozege worked in this library while he was prepa ring his monumental catalogue o f five volu mes, "Turkish Books Printed in old letters" on the Ottoman press and publishing life. The late Seyfettin Ozege, used to work at the Tank Us Lib rary every Friday working both fo r the cyassification o f the library and fo r his ca talogue. The author o f this article is among the lucky ones who have had the pleasure o f meeting him under the roof o f this libra- ray. Seyfettin Ozege leads the list o f people whose tremendous efforts have enabled the library to survive to our day. The library was able to give service thanks to the registry system he established there.
Today thes precious library is in a very saddening state. Serving with one personnel fo r many years and not being able to offer the f a cilities o f a modem library, today it remains closed. When the person who was appointed there at its opening died in 1990, his son carried out the work on voluntary basis fo r a certain period o f time. Unfor tunately today there is no one in charge and this unique collection o f universal importance is left to decay. Bearing in mind that half the libraries in Istanbul put out o f use after the earthquake o f 17th Au gust, it is not difficult to understand the present day importance o f
this library. Unfortunately there seems to be no citizen o f no corpo ration to change the fate o f this library, a treasure which no longer anyone can use. However the most important and urgent task at the
moment is to ensure the safety o f the collection. m
