The first meeting of the network “the Nordic Arctic Communicable Disease Control Network (NACDCN)” took place at the Clarion Hotel Sense in Luleå, Sweden 23-24

th

of February 2017 (lunch to lunch). The members of the network are colleagues from the northern parts of Finland, Norway and Sweden with a regional responsibility for communicable disease control and prevention.

The three main objectives of the first meeting where

 to initiate contacts between the colleagues

 to get an understanding of the differences in communicable disease legislations of our countries

 to explore the options for future contacts and cooperation

Anders Nystedt opened the meeting with a welcome and a short introduction

to the background of this initiative. He gave examples of past situations

when a closer contact between our regions would have been beneficial. And

presented an idea regarding an early warning system between our counties in

case of outbreaks or discovered cases of rare infections.

Possibilities of experience exchange and the need to understand each other’s way of dealing with communicable disease control and Infection control was also discussed. The meeting noted the support we have from our different health care providers’ chief executives in this cooperation.

After an around the table presentation of the participants at the meeting we discussed the differences in our countries Communicable Disease Acts and how the work with communicable diseases and also infection control was organized. Pia Holma (prompted by her colleagues from Rovaniemi and Oulu) described the systems in Finland. Annelin Lyshoel told us about the setup in Norway and Stephan Stenmark covered Sweden.

After a short coffee break we discussed the work with communicable disease and infection control in our counties and municipals. We discussed local initiatives with aims and goals for our regional work.

This discussion continued on Friday and we also presented statistical data on infectious disease prevalence and incidence in our different counties. And which questions that are on the menu at the moment in Finland, Norway and Sweden. Stephan also presented the work with antibiotic stewardship against antibiotic resistance that is done by the Strama network in Sweden.

The last point on the program was a discussion about continuation of this co- op. There was a strong support for this in the group and we decided to plan for a new meeting of the network in the spring of 2018. After this (to be decided 2018) preliminary meetings every second year. A focus point for the next meeting was suggested to be our work against spread of multi resistant bacteria. Other topics that can be discussed at future meetings could be Infection control in hospitals and nursing home. We could also have a meeting focusing on certain diagnoses such as blood borne infections, TB, gastroenteritis and such. We also discussed the possibility to invite

representatives from our national bodies and also from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) but that will have to be later on.

Next meeting shall be with focus on MRB.

We also talked about the possibility to invite representatives from Russia (Murmansk and Karelia oblasts) but we decided to wait with that decision.

Unfortunately Annelin Lyshoel had to leave the meeting (to catch her flight back to Tromsö) before we could decide on place for this 2018 meeting. We agreed on asking Annelin first if there was an interest to “take the ball” and invite us all to Tromsö (or Harstad) next year in April but if that wasn’t possible we might meet in Finland.

The Power Point presentations and other material from the meeting can be

found on the Smittskydd Norrbotten website under “utbildningar” – Nordic

Arctic Communicable Diseases Network 2017.
