Birinci Cihan Harbinin neticesinde OsmanlI Imperatorluğu çökmüş, İstanbul işgal altında iken İstiklâl Harbi Anadoluyu
kurtarmış, son padişah, Mehraed VI., kaçmıştı. Saltanat lağvedilmişti, Hilâfet^ m a k a m İstanbul olarak‘İlân edilmişti.
OsmanlI saltanatının veliahdi Abdulmecid.efendi, Büyük Millet Meclisi-tarafından halifeliğe intihab edilmiş, Dolmabağçeûe (şimdi Resim ve Heykel Müzesi olan) Veliahd Dairesinden taşınarak k±±±ş±k±ri bitişiğindeki büyük saraya yerleşmişti.
Halife, Istanbuldaki müteaddid cemiyetlerin heyetlerini kabul ediyordu.

LIFE in the last Turkish harems and in
THE HAREM OF THE LAST KHALIFE
1
At the end of World War I the Ottoman Empire had collapsed. 300,000 Turkish soldiers had died on tne snow-clad mountains of the Caucasus, in tne plains of Galicia, and among the scorched
sands of Arabia. In many villages in Anatolia not a man was left alive. Those who had been called to fight never returned. Armenian bands massacred starving women and children, thus preparing for themselves stern reprisals.
The leaders responsible for the catoatrophy had fled, some hoping to find shelter in Central Europe, others looking out for new adventures in Central Asia. All were to be ruthlessly murdered.
Fatal diseases added themselves to the ravages caused by war and tyranny. My husband was one of the victims, and I was ler't a
young widow, with three small children.
Istanbul was occupied by the Allied troops. Although truce
had been signed at Mondros the northern and southern provinces of , Anatolia were invaded. On the 13th of May 1919 a Greek army, under
cover of the British fleet, entered İzmir, while massacres continued in tne Eastern provinces.
Nothing could break the spirit of the nation. Militias
formed spontaneously to resist the invaders, and save the homeland from utter shame, ruin, and destruction. Meetings of protestation in Istanbul, under occupation, proclaimed the indomitable will of the people to struggle for freedom and independence.
The movement of resistance found able leaders in great Turkish generals. Of these Mustafa Kemal assumed the supreme command. They united the several bands which had been forming * everywhere. At Ankara Mustafa Kemal was elected President of the National Assembly. A regular army was organized.
The reigning Sultan, Mehmed VI,, had chosen as his residence the Palace of Yıldız, which had been built by his brother
Abdul-Hamid II. on top of a hill overlooking the Bosphorus.
♦It is surrounded'by a beautiful park, with numerous ponds and kiosks, now open to the public. There Abdul-Hamid had lived with his several wives and unmarried children.
Mehraed VI. was eager to reestablish the autocratic monarchy
under cover of foreign protection, and determined to accept the Treaty of Sevres. He was pleased to consider the movement of resistance as a rebellion. National leaders were sentenced by
2
default, and condemned to death. But the resistance continued successfully. The Trench evacuated Adana, the Italians Antalya, the northern provinces were pacified, an" the eastern invaders
definitely routed. The Greek armies were driven into the sea.
The Sultan was a fugitive.
The National Government abolished the monarchy, but as Istanbul was still under occupation.Prince Abdul-Kecid 3#Ma&L, first- cousin to the four last Sultans, and heir apparent, was elected Ehalife, i.e. successor to the Prophet, and spirtitual chief of the Islamic world.
To those of my readers who may not have a clear idea of what i 9 exactly meant by a Khalife I might recall that the Khalifes were the successors of the Prophet when the Islamic world formed formed one state. The first four Khalifes are called "orthodox" because they were freely elected by the people. In 661 A.C. the Khalifate became hereditary in the House of Omayya, and in 750 A.C.
in the House of Abbas, to whom belongs the famous Harun-al-Rashid. But the Islamic state was already divided into many independent or
semi-independent states, and the Khalifes gradually lost all
temporal power, which fell into the hands of the powerful Turkish dynasty of the Saljuks, who were succeeded by the Ottoman dynasty.
Tn 1517 the Ottoman Sultan Selim I., after he united Syria and Egypt to his empire, assumed the title of Khalife, thus re-uniting
the spritual power with the temporal.
How in 1922 the National Government of Turkey again separated both powers. History seemed to repeat itself, with a difference, for the temporal, power no longer belonged to a Sultan, but to the National Assembly.
^Ahdul-Mecid was an enlightened prince, a patron of art and literature, and himself a musician and a painter. He had been persecuted for his liberal ideas, as he made no secret of his
sympathy for the national cause, which led him into open hostility with Mehmed VI.
’ Now I think I must introduce the writer of these lines to explain how I stayed six months in the Palace od Dolmabag$e, in the harem of the Khalife*
First of all I must make clear the real significance of the word harem, because in the West it has bden given a meaning
considered more alluring.
Harem is an Arabic word which means a "sacred place"• It is
