DEATH OF W. H. E. ALLEN
William Henry Edwin Allen, Dean of Students at Robert College in Istanbul, died last January 2. A member of the College staff since 1926 and since 1943 Dean of Students, Mr. Allen was born in England in 1885. He prepared for a teaching career at the Islington Train ing College in London. From 1904 until 1915 he taught in England, and in 1915 joined the British Army, spending six years on active service in Macedonia and the Caucasus. On his discharge, with the rank of captain, he chose to stay in Istanbul.
In the minutes of the meeting of the
Board of Trustees of Robert College, held January 15, 1952, a statement re-
( n ferring to Dean Allen’s death included ■ this tribute:
"Dean Allen contributed a quarter of O a century of devoted service to this insti-
i n tution, as an efficient administrator, a just disciplinarian, and an untiring advo cate of good sportsmanship. The high standards of conduct which he demanded and even the severity with which he sometimes maintained these standards, were such as to command respect from everyone . . . There was a solidity in him, as a man, which not only befitted his office, but which made him a rock of dependability.”
