savundu. Ve o surları ilk kez aşan,
Constantinopolis’i aldığında henüz
21 yaşında olan genç sultan II.
Mehmed’in (Fatih) ordularından
önce, 13. yüzyıl başında bu muhte
şem imparatorluk başkentini işgal
eden Haçlılar oldu. Ama, Haçlıların
istilası dünya başkenti Constanti-

nerek oldu.
İstanbul Surları’nın geçmişi, Doğu

eşittir. Biz bu imparatorluğu bugün
yanlış olarak Bizans diye anıyoruz.
Bu tabir 16. yüzyıl Alman hüma

Y e t neither this nor any other defensive walls or castle have kept out enemies for so long as the walls of Istanbul. For no less than 1000 years these walls succeeded in protecting the capital o f the Eastern Roman Empire against attacks by barbarian tribes in late antiquity, and later against more disciplined armies with sophisticated equipment. The land walls and their gates on the western side o f the city are both o f more aesthetic value and greater historic importance than the sea walls along the shores o f the Marmara Sea and the Golden Horn. This is because the main thrust of siege and invasion was always from the west. It was from this direction that the Latin invaders attacked; that the Paleologan dynasty o f the Nicean Empire returned to Istanbul following 57 years of Latin domination; and that the Turkish armies attacked in

Surların üstündeki en önemli kapı Topka-

muştu. Bugün bu kapıdan girerseniz, Mimar
Sinan’ın eseri olan Kara Ahmet Paşa Camii’ni
ziyaret edersiniz. Arada Sulukule Kapısı ise
renkli bir mahalleye açılır, bugün dahi şehrin
eğlence sektörüne hizmet eden Roman nüfus

Kapısı idi. Rivayete göre 29 Mayıs 1453 günü
genç padişah, fethettiği şehre bu kapıdan gir

dan şehre girerlerdi. Halk sevdiği hükümdarın
dönüşüne alkış tutar, sevmediği III. Mehmed

If you enter through this gate, you can visit Kara Ahmet Paşa Mosque, the w ork o f the celebrated 16th century Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. The next minor gate is Sulukule Gate, which leads into a colourful district inhabited by gypsies, many o f whom make a living as musicians.
N ext comes the gate which was the most important in Ottoman times, Edime Gate, which opened onto the main road through the city. It is said that the young Mehmed II entered the conquered city through this gate on 29 May 1453, and it was through this imposing gate that the Ottoman armies passed on their way back from victorious campaigns in Europe. The populace would applaud returning rulers whom they held in affectionate regard, and even those, like Mehmed III, who was unpopular, would be sent to w ar from here with compassion and respect. Caravans arriving from afar would here catch sight of the rich buildings o f the city and the elegant mosque built by Mimar Sinan fo r Mihrimah Sultan, daughter of Süleyman the Magnificent.
