T
Fener Patriği I. Bartholomeos bugün dünyadaki 260 milyon Ortodoks'un manevi lideri. İstanbul Patrikhanesi aynı zamanda "Ekumenik Patriklik"
R
eligious diversity in Turkey is astonishing. With upcoming o f Easter on April the 11th by Catholoics and Protestants and on the 18th by Orthodox Christians in Istanbul this will be emphasized once again. Today in Turkey there are over forty different ethnic groups and twenty different Christian denominations alone, one o f which is the Greek Orthodox Church, which has coexisted with Islam in Istanbul fo r no less than 540 years. The Fener Patriarchate is the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which represents the views a n d decisions o f all Orthodox churches everywhere in the world. Orthodox Christians living in Western Europe, in US, in Australia a n d in Greece are a ffilia te d with the Ista n b u lolarak da tanımlanıyor.
bulu-Patriarchate, and their spiritual leaders are elected by Synod in Fener. As the spiritual centre o f the Orthodox Church, the Fener Patriarchate is the leader o f the 260 million Orthodox Christians all around the world. Today in Turkey there are fo ur bishoprics affiliated to the patriarchate (Kadıköy, Prince Islands, Terkos, and Bozcaada-Gökçeada), 61 Greek Orthodox churches and 11 monasteries. The Greek Orthodox community in Turkey numbers five thousand people, o f which 300 live in Gökçeada, and about 70 in Bozcaada. Today in Istanbul there are close to fiv e thousand Greek Orthodox individuals affiliated with the church. During the exchange o f Turkish and Greek popula tions following the War o f Independence and the later 21
nuyor.
İstanbul Patrikhanesi, O rtodoks m ezhebinin manevi anlamda merkezi.
1991 yılında seçilen yeni Patrik I. Bartholomeos, 1940 yılında İmroz Adası'nda (bugün Gökçeada) doğmuş, 1961-63 yılları ara sında Türk Silahlı Kuvvetlerinde yedek subay ola rak askerliğini yapmış. Bartolomeos, Bizans dönem inden bu yana seçilen 270. patrik. I. Bartholomeos, iki yıl öncesine kadar Alaşehir Metropoliti iken, o dönemde (aynı zamanda I. Bartolomeos'un manevi babası olan) Kadıköy Metropoliti Meliton'un ölümünden sonra İstan bul'a çağrılmış. 1990 yılında Kadıköy Metropoliti olan I. Bartholomeos Türk vatandaşı.
Son
seçim-migrations, most o f the Greeks living in Turkey moved to Greece, leaving less than five thousand Greek Orthodox Christians in Istanbul.
Although the Patriarchate in Istanbul is the spiritual centre o f Orthodox Christianity, it cannbt interfere in the internal workings o f Orthodox churches else where in the world, though it still has the function o f presiding over them, calling them to meetings, and coordination in general. Patriarch Bartholomew I, who was elected in 1991, was bom on İmroz Island (now Gökçeada- a small island in the mouth o f the Dardanelles) in 1940. He did his military service between 1961-63 and is the 270th patriarch to take office sip ce the B y z a n tin e period. He was Metropolitan o f Alaşehir (Philadelphia) until 1990, when upon the death o f the K adıköy M etropolitan Meliton (Bartholomew’s godfather) he was called to Istanbul to take his place . He is o f Turkish natio nality. When a new patriarch is to be elected, the list o f candidates is sent to the Istanbul Governor’s Office by the Synod fo r approval. Bartholomew I, who was viewed as the most likely candidate, a nd without any restrictions on the part o f the Government o f Turkey on the list o f candidates, was elect ed as Ecumenical Patriarch at the age o f 52. The Patriarchate build ing is close to the shore o f the Golden Horn in the d istrict o f Fener, once home to the rich and powerful Phanariot Greek fa m i
lies. Those old days o f splendour have passed, a n d today visitors frequently mistake the imposing Fener Greek High School fo r the Patriarchate, which is disappointingly modest. If you wish to visit Haghia Yorgi Church inside the Patriarchate, you will have to wait fo r another year, because the church is being entirely restored, and at present there is nothing to see but bare beams. Patriarch Bartholomew responded as follows to Skylife's questions:
SKYLIFE: For about 500 years the Center o f the Orthodox Church has been in Turkey, a country with a different religion. How do you evaluate the position o f the Patriarchate during this span o f his
tory?
BARTHOLOMEW: The period o f "co"-existence to which you refer is 540 years to be exact. This age- old civilization and tradition, solidly connected to

I. Bartholomeos Ekumenik Patrik olarak oybir

260 milyon Ortodoks'un burada yaşayan dini lideri I. Bartholomeos Skylife'm sorularını yanıtla dı:
the spirit o f the Christian Gospel which always pro claims that the one God a n d Father o f all people
"desires everyone to be saved a n d to come to the knowledge o f the truth", does not have only the capa bility, but the fundam entally imposed'duty toward brotherly co-existence among the various religions involved and creative cooperation fo r the benefit o f all.
However, the fact that during the span offivehundred an d forty years, mentioned by you, there indeed were difficulties and historical peripeteias caused by the emergence o f phyletism and other reasons which were not in the least religious -well known facts whih constitute bitter memories- is why we, all the leaders o f peoples, political and religious, have a sacred duty
to help, through every possible means, to forget what is unpleasant and protect and develop values fo r all humankind which must at all times characterize the unique human race.
SKYLIFE. W ould yo u like to co m m ent fro m an Orthodox point o f view with regard to the develop ments in the new world which is changing due to the opening up o f the blocks and particularly due to the disbanding o f the former Soviet Union? What is the situation in the world o f the Orthodox Church at this instant?
BARTHOLOMEW: For the Orthodox Church, as is cer tainly true o f every religious community, the multiple problem s a n d dissenting p o in ts o f view which, unforeseen, emerged from the crumbling o f the
totali-2 4
SSCB'deki ateist totaliter sistemin çökmesiyle ortaya çıkan sayısız so runlar ve görüş ayrılıkları büyük üzüntüye yolaçtı.

tarian atheistic system o f the former Soviet Union indeed give cause fo r much grief. It is also quite natural fo r this g rie f to overshadow a nd m inim ize the justifiable jo y upon being liberated o f those peoples affected, as well as the Church's God-graced satisfaction. Given the fact that the overwhelming majority o f Christian peoples in these coun tries are Orthodox faithful, the par ticular concern a n d more direct responsibility o f Orthodox Christians everywhere in support o f them, to the extent that their sacred rights have been disregarded or violated in spite o f every legal and moral order, is just: among these very often are included even basic human rights. SKYLIFE: There appears to be an upsurge o f religious faith through out the world. Could you comment on the escalation o f faith in these present times? What do you foresee fo r the future from a religious point
o f view?
BARTHOLOMEW: O f course these is an upsurge o f religious faith during the present historical moment when the world is unexpectedly and dras tically changing. This is both natu ral a n d comforting. It is natural because, fa c e d with all kinds o f dangers one expects fro m the unknown and from what chaos is to come, man becomes more genuinely conscious o f the finiteness and vul nerability o f his own nature a n d with more sincerity tumes towards the mercy o f God; and it is comfort ing because the source o f truth and power, w hich can only be the unchanging God and not the ever- c h a n g in g world, is now being revealed anew.
There is no need to try to foresee the fu tu re o f religion, because it is a given fa ct that the phenomenon of
religion has become ingrained in the nature o f man since the begin ning, and no matter if and how the socio-political situations impede it each time, God the Almighty Creator guarantees it as an eternal a n d
indestructible value. •
