li bir anıt mezar yaptırdığı biliniyor.
AvrupalIların “Tour de Leandre”, Türklerin “Kızku-
lesi” adlarını vermeleri ise efsanelerden kaynakla
nır: Mitolojik kahraman Leandre, sevgilisi Hero ile
burada buluşurmuş; bir gece yüzerek kuleye geçer
ken boğulmuş; Hero da intihar etmiş... Bir başka
söylenceye göre Üsküdar Tekfuru güzel kızını bu
rada saklarmış.
İmparator Manuel Komnenos’un (1143-1180) bura
ya ve Sarayburnu’na kuleler yaptırlıp zincir bağlata
rak Boğaz trafiğini denetim altına aldığını Bizans ta
rihleri yazmaktadır. Osmanlı Beyi Orhan Gazi
(1326-1360) ile Bizans İmparatoru Kantakuzenos
(1347-1354) arasındaki diplomatik görüşmelerin de
elçiler aracılığıyla bu kulede gerçekleştirildiği bilin
mektedir.
Türklerin İstanbul’u fethinden sonra Bostancıbaşıla-
rın denetimine geçen Kızkulesi’nde sürgüne gönde
rilecekler tutuklanıyordu. 1726’da yapılan ahşap
fener yanınca, kubbesi kurşunlu kârgir bir kule
yapılmıştı. Günümüze, 1830’daki onanında aldığı
barok biçimiyle ulaşan Kızkulesi, bir zamanlar
fener, karantina, tutukevi, top yeri iken şimdilerde
işlevsizdir.
The Maiden’s Tower

This tower on an islet at the m o u th o f th e Bosphorus is o n e o f th e la n d m a r k s o f Istanbul. The tower was first built here by Alkibiades in the 6th century BC. a n d around 350 BC a Macedonian adm i ral b u ilt a sp le n d id m a u soleum fo r his dead unfe here.
The French nam e Tour de Leandre a n d Turkish nam e Kızkulesi both originate fro m legends. According to the first (which was actually set on the Dardanelles rather than the Bosphorus) the mythological hero Leander used to meet here with his M oved Hero, hut one night he was drowned while swimming to the Tourer a n d Hero commit ted suicide. The second refers to a story about a king o f Scutari (Üsküdar) who kept his beautiful daughter locked up here.
The Byzantine emperor Manuel Comnenus (1143-1180) had tourers built both here a n d at the headland south o f the Golden Horn, a n d chains fix ed M w een the two which prevented ships entering the Bosphorus without permis sion. Diplomatic talks Mureen the Ottoman Sultan Orhan G a zi (1 3 2 6 -1 3 6 0 ) a n d th e B y z a n tin e E m p ero r C antakuzenus (1347-1354) are know n to have taken place in this tower.
Follouring the Turkish conquest o f Istanbul the tourer was used to imprison those being sent into exile. When the wooden tourer built in 1726 was destroyed by fire it was replaced by a masonry tower with a lead dome. The pre sent baroque fo rm o f this tower dates from repairs carried out in 1830. In the past it served variously as lighthouse, quarantine station, prison a n d artillery emplacement.
