olan bu Ortaçağ so kağı; Kule meydanın dan limana inen biri cik yoldu ve Galata surlarının kapıların dan Küçükkule Kapısı ile Kemeraltı’na bağ lanmıştı. Yüksekkaldı- rım eski manzarası ile Cenova sokaklarını an dırıyordu. Kuşkusuz sokağa bu esintiyi ve renler de 15. yüzyıl or talarına değin Galata’yı ellerinde tutan Cenova- lılardı. Ayrıca limana yakın lığın d an dolayı gem icilerin dolup b o şaldığı b atak h an eler, meyhaneler Ytiksekkal- dırım’a bağlı ara sokak lardaydı.
Bu ilginç sokağın klasik döşemesi yük hayvanla rının da işleyebileceği biçimde basamaklı kaldı rımdı. 1875’te Tünel ser vise girinceye kadar gün de ortalama 40 bin kişi, başka bir deyimle İstanbul nüfusunun 1/25’i bu soka ğı kullandığı için, kentin en kalabalık sokağıydı. Muhtar Alııs buraya “Beyoğlu yakasının Mahmutpa- şa Yokuşu” der. Ancak o zamanki daracık dükkan lardan, yaymacılardan, mezatçılardan, işportacılar dan; şapkacı, kitapçı, plakçı, fotoğrafçı, çerçeveci esnafından günümüze kalan geleneklerden söz edi lemez. Doğal olarak ünlü Çardaklı Kahve, turist lerin, ressamların uğrağı Maks ITühterman’ın onbin- lerce kartpostalın pazarlandığı dükkanı da unutul muştur. Kaldırımları 1940’ta yenilenen Ytiksekkal- dırım’ın bu tarihsel döşemesi 1956’de bozulmuş ve asfalt kaplanmıştır.

In fo rm e r times Y üksekkaldm m resem bled the streets o f G enoa, not s u p ris in g ly s in c e the Genoese possessed this town f a c i n g Ista n b u l o v er the G o ld en H o rn u n til the mid-15th century. Its prox imity to the harbour m ade it a haunt o f sailors a n d b ro th els a n d d r in k in g h o u ses f i l l e d its s id e streets. Until the short stretch o f u n d e rg ro u n d fu n icu la r railway known as Tünel was built from the top to the bottom o f
the hill in 1 8 7 5 an aver age o f 4 0 ,0 0 0 people, the equivalent o f 4 p e r cent o f Istanbul's population at the time, used this street every day, making it the busiest in the entire city. The Turkish writer Sermet M u h ta r A lu s d e s c rib e s Yüksekkaldmm as a huh o f Istanbul life at the turn o f the century, the equivalent o f Mahmutpaşa Hill in Istanbul proper. Yüksekkaldm m was lined with tiny shops o f all kinds, selling everything from hats to hooks, a n d the pavements were crowded with street vendors, their wares on barrows or laid out on the pavement. The f a m o u s Ç a rd a k lı C o ffee H o u se a n d M ax Frilhterman's postcard shop whose best customers were tourists a n d artists have long since been forgotten. In 1940 the cobbles were replaced, hut when the surface again deteriorated they were replaced by asphalt in 1956.
