Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and his team travelled to Iran carrying out a series of visits between the 1st and 3rd of September 2018. The team from EMU paid visits to the Parliament of Iran, Iran’s Ministry of Health, Iran University of Medical Sciences and the Tehran University of Medical Sciences. During the

visits, academic collaborations and new arrangements in health education were discussed. During the visits in Iran, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam was accompanied by Vice Rector for International Affairs and Promotion Prof. Dr. Cem Tanova, Public Relations and Press Office Director (a.) Murat Aktuğralı and Rector’s Consultant Aman Rassouli.

The German University in Cairo academic staff member Prof. Dr. Abdelmegid Mahmoudabdalla Allam visited the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) from the 26th to the 30th of August 2018. Prof. Dr. Allam who is a co-supervisor of a student at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering delivered two seminars on consecutive days. The seminars aimed towards EMU students were on “Aviation Navigation” and “Diagnosis of diseases in human tissue using microwave antenna sensors”.

Visit to Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and Prof. Dr. H. Tanju Besler

During his time at EMU, Prof. Dr. Allam visited EMU Rector Prof.

Dr. Necdet Osam and Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Halit Tanju Besler. During the visit, he received information about EMU and discussed possible collaborations between the two universities. In addition student exchange programs, a joint scientific project, the design and production of antennas small enough to integrate into the human body at EMU and the formation of a laboratory where they can be tested were discussed. Prof. Dr. Allam provided information about the German University in Cairo also stating that he was hosted very well at EMU which he described as an impressive university. During the visit Prof. Dr. Allam was accompanied by Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Chair Prof.

Dr. Hasan Demirel and Vice Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rasime Uyguroğlu.

Who Is Prof. Dr. Allam?

Prof. Dr. Allam is currently the Chair of the Communication Department

of the German University in Cairo. He has numerous publications and laboratory work on antennas microwave antennas, modern vehicle antennas, special antennas and implant antennas.

University of City Island Board of Trustees President Talip Emiroğlu and Rector Prof. Dr. Adnan Akgün paid a visit of courtesy to the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Rector’s Office on Thursday, the 6th of September 2018. During the said visit Emiroğlu and Prof.

Dr. Akgün met with Rector Prof. Dr. Osam, extending their best wishes for the new academic year. Prof. Dr. Osam thanked the duo for their visit, touching upon what the universities from the same city can do in order to provide valuable contributions to Famagusta.

The 21st Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Orientation Days are taking place between the 6th and 28th of September 2018. The main sponsor of the event is North Cyprus Turkcell. The program offers new students a series of seminars and trips as well as an array of social and cultural activities to ease their adaptation process both to the university and surroundings. New students are being met at Ercan Airport as well as at the Famagusta and Kyrenia ports before they are taken to their dormitories. As part of the Orientation Days information desks have been set up for new students and their families outside the EMU-2 Dormitory, the Social and Cultural Activities Directorate, the Registrar’s Office, the Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School and the International Office. Within the framework of the 21st Orientation Days, film screenings will be taking place at the open-air cinema set up in front of EMU-2 dormitory every night at 8:00 p.m from the 14th to the 28th of September 2018 in addition to other social and cultural activities such as games and live music. Such events will provide new students with the opportunity to meet

other new students in a social context. New students will also be offered various tours within the TRNC, including a Famagusta tour on the 21st of September 2018, a Nicosia and Kyrenia tour on the 22nd of September 2018 and a Karpaz tour on the 23rd of September 2018. Assistants will also be taking part in the tours and will be available to answer any questions the students may have.

Mustafa Sandal Concert at Welcoming Night

On the 25th of September 2018 a “Welcoming Night” celebrating the arrival of newly registered students will be taking place. At 19:30 a magnificent concert will commence at the EMU Stadium during which Turkey’s popular artist Mustafa Sandal will be performing his biggest hits. The Welcoming Night will also feature the promotion of different Faculties and Schools as well as various sports competitions, stage performances and recreational activities organized by Student Clubs. New students and their families will have the opportunity to try traditional Cypriot dishes in addition to meeting and socializing with other new students.

EMU’S 21ST ORIENTATION DAYS BEGIN

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Department of Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Senih Çavuşoğlu has been invited to participate in the “Amphorae” project organized by Europa Nostra and the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus. The project will be taking place within the scope of the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage. Europa Nostra was founded on the 29th November 1963 in Paris. For over 50 years, they have celebrated, protected and lobbied

for cultural heritage. Europa Nostra is today recognized as the most representative heritage organization in Europe with members from over 40 countries. The 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage celebrates diverse cultural heritage across Europe at national, regional and local levels. The aim of the European Year of Cultural Heritage is to encourage more people to discover and engage with Europe’s cultural heritage, and to reinforce a sense of belonging to a common European space. The slogan for the year is: “Our Heritage:

Where the Past Meets the Future.” Within the scope of the “Amphorae” project 12 contemporary artists were delivered Cypriot terracotta amphorae in August 2018 which they will be decorating. In September 2018 short video interviews will be carried out with the artists and the decorated amphorae will be collected. The amphorae will be exhibited at the EU House in Nicosia in October 2018 and in Vienna, Austria between the 6th and 8th of December 2018 as part of the closing ceremony of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

The Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) continues to send students abroad within the scope of student exchange programs. While student exchange programs have been available at EMU for over 10 years, the exchange program currently collaborates with 24 universities across 18 countries. EMU students can enhance their educational experience by studying at these universities for one or two semesters. As a result of collaborations with some of the world’s leading universities, every EMU student is provided the opportunity to receive education in countries such as America, Germany, Iran, Denmark, Canada, Italy, Austria, South Korea and China where the credits they obtain will be valid at EMU. The university’s experienced International Office team provides personal counselling for students who choose to partake on the extremely useful Student Exchange Program journey. Proving more opportunities for more students, EMU continues to expand the universities and countries which students can travel to within the scope of the student exchange program. During the last semester, EMU hosted 8 students from China, Kazakhstan and Austria. The students received education at the Banking and Finance, Tourism and Hospitality

Management, Psychology and Civil Engineering Departments.

EMU Students are Preparing to Travel to Different Regions:

The International Office has determined 10 students that will be coming to EMU within the scope of the Student Exchange Program for the Fall Semester of the 2018-2019 Academic Year. During the same period 15 EMU students will be travelling to universities who are in collaboration with EMU. One student from the Tourism and Hospitality Management program will be travelling to South Korea along with one student from the Gastronomy and Culinary Arts program and another from the Industrial Engineering Department. One student from the Management Engineering Department and two students from the Computer Engineering Department will be receiving education in New York. A student from the Banking and Finance Department will be studying at another American state; Illinois. 2 students will be travelling to Calgary, Canada (one from the Guidance and Psychological Counselling Department and another from the Department of Business Administration). A further three students will be going to Germany (from the Departments of Business, Tourism and Hospitality Management

and Political Science). Finally, students from the Department of Management Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering will be continuing their education in İzmir.

Bulut: “It was an Amazingly Useful Period”

Mert Ercan Bulut from the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management who studied as an exchange student in South Korea described his experience as affecting his career in a positive manner. Indicating that it is important for a Tourism and Hospitality student to understand cultural differences in order to be successful Bulut stated: “South Korea is a region which is

very different to our country in terms of daily life, culture and philosophy. It was important for me to go there and see this for myself. . I can say that this semester was extremely beneficial as I obtained important information that will help my future career whilst studying the philosophies and culture of the Far East. EMU STUDENTS EXPLORE THE WORLD

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Communication academic staff member and Institutional Communication, Social Media and Web Office Coordinator Dr. Raziye Nevzat delivered education on Digital Marketing and Social Media at The School for Young Leaders in

Macedonia. Dr. Raziye Nevzat attended the education program that took place between the 27th of August and 1st of September 2018 upon invitation from the Republic of Macedonia Presidency. The School for Young Leaders is a project of the President of the Republic of Macedonia Dr. Gjorge

Ivanov which was initiated following his idea and vision to enable the young, talented and ambitious people from Macedonia to upgrade and improve their skills, to develop their creativity and managerial capacities. This years’ School for Young Leaders is the ninth of its kind.

“I am Happy and Proud”

Expressing that she is proud to have received an invitation from the Republic of Macedonia Presidency and happy to be sharing her experiences with young people, Dr. Nevzat indicated that participants were very satisfied with the education they received. Relaying that she had the opportunity to meet with President Dr. Gjorge Ivanov in his office Dr. Nevzat noted that they carried out a conversation regarding education as well as the positive and negative effects of digitalization.

“Education is Provided by Experts from All Over the World”

In eight years, approximately 320 young people from all over

the country and abroad received education at the School which was organized for the first time in August 2010 in Ohrid. Those who participated in the School did so with the aim of developing their leadership skills and talents in different academic and professional fields. The mission of the School is to stimulate the positive values of the young intellectual elite and future political, cultural and economic leaders of the country and moreover to develop their capacities to take on the challenges which have emerged with global technologies, international competition and cultural as well as religious diversities. The program includes lectures and training delivered by experts from all over the world in the fields of leadership and management. The vision of the School for Leaders is to be a training center with high standards and a responsibility for integration of the modern political, scientific and technological knowledge and skills, based on respect for the basic human values.

a statement on 8th of September World Physiotherapists Day which reads as follows: “Public health and quality of life has been increasing since the emergence

of physiotherapy over 100 years ago. Physiotherapy emerged as a profession in Turkey and our country approximately 50 years ago. A physiotherapist is defined

as someone who has received undergraduate education in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, obtaining the necessary knowledge and skills to become a health professional. A physiotherapist is an important component of the rehabilitation team. In addition to the physiotherapist, such a team comprises of healthcare personnel such as a physical medicine and rehabilitation expert, specialty physicians, an occupational therapist, a dietician, an orthesis and prosthesis technician, a psychologist and a social service expert. When physiotherapists apply treatment and rehabilitation programs they make use of a range of daily exercises, neuromuscular treatment approaches, manual treatment methods, electrotherapy, functional activity education and vocational rehabilitation techniques. In our county a physiotherapist can work at hospitals, medical centers, special education schools, rehabilitation centers, fitness centers, sports clubs and old people’s homes. On behalf of the EMU Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation I wish you a happy Physiotherapists Day.”
