Course Description:

CMN 198 is a Freshman course for the students of Faculty of Communication. It aims to improve the level of English from Elemantary to Lower Intermediate. Since the students directly come from the Lycee without having education in Preparation School at the university, their level is appropriate to elemantary level. The main emphasis of the course is on the development of grammar to the related areas Reading and Speaking.

Course Objectives:

 To raise the students’ level of English from Elemantary to Lower Intermediate.

 To improve students’ grammar knowledge in order to build up sentences correctly, to understand whatever they read and write and to develop their terminology.

 To improve students’ Reading skills with the use of simple texts and help them understand whatever they read.

 To improve the students’ Speaking skills with the use of pictures taken from various magazines and newspaper related to their fields.

Course Assessment:

Mid-term Exam ...40%

Final Exam ...60%

Bonus (Attendance and Participation) ...10%

In this Course as a text book, a compile booklet is used. The subjects and exercises are taken from various grammar books listed below. The absent students can also follow the lesson by looking at these reference books at the library. The weekly Time Allocation is given to the students at the beginnig of the semester on the first lesson. So it is easy to follow the subjects by looking at the list even if they are absent. Attendance is

compulsory in order to achieve the goal. Missing too many lessons means “failure”

because it is difficult to recover the missing ones. The exams are in classical written style.

The aim is to understand if the taught subjects are learned enough.

Weekly Time Allocation

Weel 1 : Warm up. The Lecturer introduces her self and wants her students to introduce themselves. The introduction of the Lesson. The disciplinary rules are talked about. The students are informed about the expectations from the lesson.

Week 2: The Verb to “BE”. The lesson is taught grammatically and practiced orally in the class. They introduce themselves and their friends.

Week 3: Countries /Nationalities. They talk about their countries and nationalities

Week 4: Indefinite Articles: A/An + Jobs. They talk about their parents’ , their friends’

jobs. They study in groups.

Week 5: Subject Pronouns. Instead of Nouns they learn to use (He,she it ...)

Week 6: Prepositions. (at/In/On). They learn to use the prepositions in Time. For example we use “at” for the clock time, “in” for months, seasons, “on” for the days etc.

Week 7: Possessive Adjectives. (My, his, her....) The students start talking about themselves, about their families and friends They study in pairs.

Week 8: MID-TERM EXAMS

Week 9: Singular/ Plural Nouns

Week 10: Demonstrative Adjectives / Adverbs

Week 11: Parts of Face and Body. They describe the people’s Face and Body orally.

Week 12: Describing People: Have got / Has got. They describe people’s physical appearance and cloth

Week 13: Revision

Duration of the Course: 14 weeks Hours of the Course per week: 3 hours Credit of the Course: 3 credits

Number of the Students: 8 -15

Course Description:

CMN 298 is an English course for the Senior students in Faculty of Communication. It aims to improve the level of English from Lower Intermediate to Intermediate. The main emphasis of the course is on the development of Terminology of Doing Shopping and Having meal in the Restaurants including Speaking Skills. Also Grammar about Future Tense and Modals verbs are taught since they are related to the subject.

Course Objectives:

 To raise the students’ level of English from Lower Intermediate to Intermediate.

 To improve the students’ vovabulary stock and Speaking Skills with the use of pictures taken from various sources or magazines.

 To improve students’ Grammar knowledge in order to prepare them to a higher and more sophisticated level where they can be able to express themselves in English.

Course Assessment:

Final Oral exam ...50%

Week 3: The different usages of “will”

Week 4: How to use present Continuous for the Future

Week 5: Introduction of Modal Verbs (must, have to, should)

Week 6: Teaching Modal verbs (may, might, can, could)

Week 7: Revision

Week 8: Mid-term exam

Week 9: Shopping ( Vocabulary is given)

Week 10: Shopping : the students prepare their shopping sketch in pairs.

Week 11: At the Restaurant (Vocabulary is given)

Week 12: At the Restaurant : They prepare their having meal at the restaurant sketch

Week 13: The last practise with their friends

Week 14: Oral Exam

Course Description:

CMN 299 is a Freshman course for the students of Faculty of Communication. However since the education is based on English, it aims to improve the level of English from Upper

intermediate to Advanced. The main emphasis of the course is on the development of Terminology to the related areas including Reading and Speaking skills.

Course Objectives:

 To raise the students’ level of English from upper intermediate to Advanced.

 To improve students’ vocabulary stock and Reading Skills with the use of authentic texts and help them understand design features in print media advertising

 To improve students’ Writing skills by using Advertisement samples and Terminology in order to prepare them higher and more sophisticated level where they can be able to write effective advertisements.

Projects: 1) Create an Advertisement : 25%

2) Giving ads in the Newspaper (such as items for sale or to let): 25%
