CHAPTER V
Discussion of Statistical Results
5.1 Presentation
This chapter aims at drawing conclusions based on the significant differences that have been found by the data analysis in the previous chapter.
This part will also compare the findings of this study with the findings of similar research in the field.
5.2 Learners’ Level
Most of the research conducted on the relationship between learner’s level and the learning strategy use has found significant correlations and differences in the employment of the learning strategies. Oxford (1994) asserts that certain strategies are often being employed by more advanced students. As cited in Cook, Vivian (1993:116), O’Mally et al have reported that intermediate students have higher proportion of metacognitive strategies than beginners.
The findings of this study partly meet the findings of Oxford (1994) and O’Mally. The global analysis of the strategy use frequencies of the six categories of strategies shows that the frequencies go higher as the level advances. The means of the 3 level groups in the frequency of using cognitive strategies are as the following:
Beginner = 59.728
Intermediate = 61.166
Advanced = 65.351
