Leading off the marble street between the Koressos and Magnesia gates and set on the southwestern slope of Panayır Mountain is the great

amphitheatre, seating 24.500 people and built in the 1st century during the reigns of the emperors Claudius and Traianus. The 21 m wide and 530 a long street between the theatre and the harbour was repaired by the Emperor Arkadius and hence became known as Arkadiana Street. To the right of this street are the harbour baths and to the left, the Bvzantine walls. At the western and of the street is the old harbour, silted up since the 4th century BC, and behind the walls the Temple of Serapis, an Egyptian god, built in the 2nd century. To the east of this temple is the agora, measuring 111 m by 111 m, built by two slaves freed by the Emperor Augustos in the 3rd century. Adjoining the

agora on the south side is sited the library built by C.J. Aquilla in memory of his father, C.J. Celsus, Governor-General of Asia in 135 BC AD. The remains of this library were excavated in 1904, and in 1975 this two-story library 16 metres in height was reconstructed in reproduction of the original by Austrian archaeologists. The Hadrianus temple built in 130 AD and decorated with reliefs is on the left side of the street, as is the concer hall and odeon built by Vedius Antoninus and his wife in the 2nd century. To the right is a fountain and the tomb of Lucas, later converted to a church. At the foot of the Byzantine walls

between the odeon and the Koressos gate is the cave where the Seven Sleepers and their dog slept for 200 years after hiding from the persecution of the idolatrous Roman Emperor Decius in the 3rd century.
