SİRKECİ MEVKIFİ(Garı)

İstanbul'un "Batı'ya açılan ilk kapısı" burasıdır.

Osmanlı başkentini Avrupa'ya bağlayan demiryolu 1870-1873 arasında tamamlanmış; fakat hattın kent içine girmesi birçok soruna ve kayba neden olmuş­ tur. Sultan Abdülaziz'in "Tren gelsin de sırtımdan geçsin!" demesinden cesaret alan yapımcılar, surla­ rın epeyce bir bölümünü, Topkapı Sarayı'nın kıyı köşklerini, hizmet binalarını ve bahçelerini yarıp yıkarak demiryolunu Sirkeci'ye kadar ulaştırmışlar­ dır. Gar binası ise yıkılan ve çok özgün bir yapısı o lan Y alı K öşkü'nün y erin e, 1890'd a, ? II. Abdülham id zam anında inşa edilm iştir. Alman mimar Jachmund, bu anıtsal gar binasını; klâsik Türk mimarisinden seçtiği öğelerle bezeyerek şimdi artık hiçbir izi kalmayan eski Sirkeci semtine uyumu gözetmiştir.

İstanbul'a gelen Avrupa devletlerinin kralları, veli- ahtlan, prens ve prensesleri için bu garda görkemli karşılama ve uğurlama törenleri yapılmış; 1917'de, Veliahd Vahideddin Efendi (Sultan VI. Mehmed) de maiyetinde Mustafa Kemal Paşa (Atatürk) olduğu hâlde, Almanya gezisine bu gardan uğurlanmıştı. Günümüzde, tarihi binanın yanına yapılan yeni

istasyon kullanılmaktadır. •

S irkeci Station was Istanbul’s first doorway to the West. The railway linking the Ottoman capital to Europe was built between 1870 an d 1873, but the fin a l stretch o f line into the city centre caused considerable difficulties. Only when Sultan A bdülaziz declared, “Let the train come, even if it comes over my back!” did the construc­ tors take courage to lay the line along the coast o f the M armara Sea through the gardens o f Topkapı Palace, demolishing pavilions an d service buildings on its way to Sirkeci. The station building was constructed on the site o f a lovely pavilion known as the Yalı Köşkü, dat­ ing from 1890 during the reign o f Abdulham id II. The German architect Jachm u n d s design fo r this m onu­ m ental station building included decorative elements from classical Turkish architecture so that the building would harm onise with the existing architectural tex­ ture o f Sirkeci, o f which not a trace rem ains today. European kings, prin ces an d princesses who visited Istanbul were welcom ed at Sirkeci Station with splen­ did cerem onial. Here it was in 1917 that heir to the Ottoman throne, Vahideddin Efendi (Sultan Mehmed VI) accom panied by Mustafa Kem al Pasha boarded the train fo r a visit to Germany. Today a m odem term inal adjoins the original station.
