or four hundred years the main centre of world poli tics and now the world’s richest museum, with its in valuable historical collec tions and its still not fully researched archives, the famous historical build ings of Topkapi Palace adorn the slopes of Seraglio Point at the con fluence of the Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. The events that took place here offer inexhaustible material for the research historian while the building itself arouses the wonder and admi ration of the thousands who visit it every day. As you stroll through the buildings scattered over this spacious site and examine the objects exhi bited in the show-cases you feel as if you were living in the splendid magnificence of the past.
Let us give you a brief outline of the history of the palace.
After his conquest of the city in 1453 Sultan Mehmet II built his pal ace on the site now occupied by the central building of the university at Bayezit. But, in view of the beauty of the view from Seraglio Point and the suitability of the site, he began here the construction of a new pal ace which was to be referred to in official documents as Saray-i Cedid.
The peninsula was surrounded by Byzantine defence walls. New walls 1400 m in length were built along the landward side and a large group of buildings erected on the enclosed site. According to the inscription on the great entrance gate or Bab-i Hu-
mayun just beside Ayasofya the con
struction was completed in Decem ber 1478. New buildings were con tinually being added in successive periods.
The Bab-i Humayun opens into a courtyard which contained build ings connected with the external functions of the Palace. Of the many pavilions erected on the shore be tween the 16th and 19th -centuries only the Sepetçiler Köşkü (Basket- makers’ Pavilion) still survives.
To the left of the Bab-i Humayun stand the Church of St Irene and the Imperial Mint. The Kozbekçiler
Gate at the top of the hill by the side of the Mint leads down to Giilhane Park and the Archaeological Muse um. The Çinili Köşk (Tiled Pavil ion) in the Museum courtyard is adorned with 15th century tiles. The building is constructed in the archi tectural style of a Seljuk medrese.
A narrow road leads from the
Bab-i Humayun to the second gate.

Topkapi Sarayt’nin Harem Dairesi ve Harem’de hayat, son yıllarda birçok batılı araştırmacının da ilgi odağı haline geldi.
In recent years the Harem apartments in Topkapi Palace and life in the Harem have attracted the attention of a number of Western scholars.
(the Gate of Peace), was built during the reign of Süleyman the Magnifi cent and forms the main entrance to the Palace proper. This opens into a courtyard known as the birun or outer courtyard. On the right of this courtyard are the palace kitchens with their twenty domes where food was prepared for fifteen thousand people. Burned down during the reign of Selim II they were restored by the architect Sinan.
On the right hand side of the courtyard are the Has Ahırlar (Im perial Stables Gate) and the Araba
lar Kapısı (Carriage Gate) leading
into the Harem. Just beside this gate is the Kubbealti, a building with three domes. On certain days of the week the Vuzera (Council of Minis ters) would meet in the Kubbealti while the chamber under the third dome was allocated to the use of the secretaries. The Sultan would sec retly follow the meetings of his min isters from behind a latticed window just above the seat occupied by the Grand Vizier.
Just beyond the Kubbealti there is a six-domed building known as the İç Hazine Dairesi (Inner Trea sury). The next gate after the Ba-
bus-Selam or Middle Gate is the
gate opening into the third court yard, variously known as the Babus-
Saade (Gate of Felicity), A k Ağalar Kapısı (Gate of the White Eunuchs)
and the Enderun Kapısı. Immediate ly opposite this gate is the Arz Odası (Audience Chamber). This is a 17th century building with decorated facade adorned with a fountain. The inscriptions over the door are the work of the calligrapher-sultans Ah met III and Mahmut II.
Immediately to the right of the entrance into the third courtyard is the Seferli Koğuşu where the private craftsmen of the Sultan and the Ha rem were housed. The building is entered through a portico of green porphyry columns and consists of two large chambers. From here a few steps lead down to the portico of the Hazine-i Humayun (Imperial Treasury). This building comprises four rooms and a spacious balcony with a portico in front supported by eight large columns. The first of the three rooms, which are entered through magnificent portals, was built by the architect Sinan. Adja cent to this section, originally the Imperial Treasury, is the Has Oda
lılar Koğuşu.
To the left of the Gate of the White Eunuchs stand the A k Ağalar
Camii (the Mosque of the White
Eunuchs) and the Has Oda (Privy Chamber) constructed to house the Holy Relics brought back by Selim I from his Egyptian campaign. The gate behind the Has Oda opens onto the courtyard in front of the Bagh dad Pavilion. Here are to be found two pavilions built by Murat IV. Along the right-hand side of the courtyard are arranged the Kara Mustafa Pasa Pavilion, the Hekim
başı Odası (Chamber of the Chief
Physician), the Esvap Odası (the Wardrobe), the Sofa Mosque and the Mecidiye Pavilion.
