Galata Whirling

Dervishes M onastery

D

espite the hectic ways of

cosmopolitan life, Istanbul, the enchanting city of many faces, is full of pleasant surprises for even the inhabitant as well as the tourist. The general impression is that of a conglomeration of ancient and modern features, both beautiful and not so beautiful, but soon enough, the visitor will feel the pulse of vital force underneath the apparent complexity.

Although istiklâl Caddesi (Independence Avenue), the former Grande Rue de Pera, is no longer the fashionable avenue it once was, one can still come across old

buildings such as the embassies (now consulates) and apartment blocks, reminding the atmosphere of grandeur, and the present public use of buildings, varying from shops to night clubs, exhibition halls to alehouses, which provide the background for a style of living appropriate for the modern Istanbul. This avenue is crowded almost all day long, and its heavy traffic together with the crowds of people from all over Turkey, create the typical stress of big city life on anyone who goes there. Starting from Taksim Square, if you walk along it, by the time you reach Tünel at the other end of the avenue, you are bound to be highly surprised when you find yourself in a secluded courtyard.

Galata Mevlevihanesi, Galata Whirling Dervishes Monastery, situated near Tünel, on a steep road leading downhill from

istiklâl Caddesi, is one of the oldest and most important dervish monasteries in Turkey. It was originally built by İskender Pasha in 1492, during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II, after a grandson of Mevlâna Celâleddin Rumi (1207-1273) visited Turkey. Mevlâna is considered as one of the most prominent mystical poets and philosophers of the Islamic World. The present building dates from 1796, bearing characteristics of the baroque and rococo styles in architecture. Since then, it has undergone restoration twice, once in the mid-nineteenth century and once again recently. The dervishes no longer whirl publicly in the divine harmonies of their mystical dance, except once in every year in Konya, as a part of the celebration programme during Mevlâna Week.

The land, on which the monastery was constructed, was a part of the wilderness where the sultans, viziers and pashas went hunting, even though many Turkish settlements had appeared around it following the conquest of Istanbul in 1453. Therefore, the monastery was situated in the heart of nature, amongst the myriad manifestations of the Supreme Being. According to Mevlâna, Divine Love, the basis of Sufism, a thought system within the Islamic philosophy, brings the believer face to face with his conscience, and thus enables him to reach an ecstatic state of unity yvith the Supreme Being. It is a holy passion. Semâ, the act of whirling, is a way of release from the mortal level in an ecstatic trance, experiencing the joy of a mystical union. Similar to the centrifugal force that pushes away the particles surrounding any whirling object, Semâ is

the purification of the person. Music, accompanying Semâ, is the key for this breath-taking enlightment. This holy music, the sound of ‘ney’ (a flute-like instrument) and the resonant rhythms, create an image of celestial, all-

encompassing Supremacy, as the similar effect of J. S. Bach’s compositions, which bring into mind a religious atmosphere where Man is reaching towards God.

In the recent past, the Ministry of Culture has converted the monastery into a museum for literature-arts; The Museum of Divan Literature. Turkish Touring and Automobile Club has also contributed to the renovation of the monastery.

Although the monastery was built as a complex of several buildings, the few remaining ones, especially the Semâhane where the dervishes practiced whirling,

are unique examples in their own right. The narrow pathway from the portal leads to the main courtyard. Through this door, the visitor steps into a world within a world, and is wrapped with the echo of the centuries old mystique presented in the embroidery, manuscripts, handwoven rugs and engravings exhibited in a serene atmosphere.

During the 1976 Istanbul Festival, Galata Mevlevihanesi provided the perfect setting for recitals of Turkish classical music, and there has also been a special ‘Mevlevi Order’ for the foreign officials in Turkey.

The tombs of famous elders or sheiks, the fountain, the library, especially the Semahane, the pleasant courtyard and the fig grove are the silent witnesses of a time long gone by, yet the feeling is still there for those who are interested ©
