SUMMARY
« Life as a journey » : Rousseau’s Turkey between complexity and contingency Rousseau’s evaluations of Turkey may appear to be inconsistent. On the one hand, Turkey is in fact harshly condemned: The Ottoman Empire is regarded as the despotic regime par excellence, and Islamic religion is criticized – alongside with the other two monotheistic religions – for its intolerance toward others creeds. On the other hand, Turkey is for Rousseau a positive model, from a moral, religious as well as political point of view. We are not dealing here, however, with yet another of the alleged contradictions in Rousseau’s thought; on the contrary, the way in which Rousseau talks about Turkey offers us a striking example of one of the thinker’s most notable theoretical strategies of philosophical research, which this article aims to explain and illustrate in details.

ousseau, et avec lui une grande partie de son siècle, témoigne d’une attention toute particulière pour la Turquie, cette réalité, à la fois si proche et si lointaine de l’Europe des Lumières et qui est souvent envisagée au XVIIIe siècle tel un modèle avec lequel se confronter.Si l’on s’en tient à un regard d’ensemble, les observations des philosophes quant à la Turquie se révèlent de fait et bien souvent fort superficielles, voir même, tout simplement stéréotypées. Mais dans leur grande majorité, elles sont pourtant animées de la reconnaissance de la grandeur et de la complexité d’un mode de vie, d’un mode de pensée et souvent, d’une
