Public Meetings
The public meetings were interesting but not as lively as David had expected. He had read stories of elections years ago when it was common for the candidates to make violent attacks on each other’s reputation as well as policy, and where things were thrown at the speakers. Indeed, he wondered whether election meetings had much effect today. Most of the people in the hall were supporters who had already decided to vote for the candidate holding the meeting. The others were supporters of the other party, who had made up their minds to vote for his opponent and had come to interrupt. On the whole, the meetings were very orderly. The best-attended was that which the Prime Minister spoke. It was most impressive to see the skilful manner in which he presented his party’s policy and handled the interrupters.
