EMU Appears on Times Higher
Education List
United Kingdom based higher education ranking board Times Higher Education (THE) has announced its 2017-2018 Academic Year World University Rankings. On the list that features 1100 universities from 79 different countries the Eastern Mediterranean University is the only university from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). With this achievement, EMU furthers its success from the 2016-2017 Academic Year World University Rankings. Providing a statement on the matter, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam indicated that he is elated and proud to announce that EMU appeared amongst the top 601-800 world universities.
Prof. Dr. Osam indicated that success is never a coincidence and that EMU is a continously growing and developing university. Prof. Dr. Osam concluded by stating that EMU is the best education institution on the island and amongst the best in the world. Some of the best world universities including Oxford, California Institute of Technology, Stanford, Cambridge, MIT, Harvard and Princeton also featured on the list. The ranking considers factors such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer, refences to academic publications, international academic personnel, number of international students, social activities and community service.
EMU Proves there are no Ambargos on Education
With its latest international achievement, EMU has once again proved that there are no ambargoes on education. After appearing amongst Turkish universities on previous lists EMU was included as a Turkish Cypriot university for the first time on the THE 2016-2017 Academic Year “BRICS and Emerging Economies University Rankings”. By appearing 173rd on the list EMU resulted in TRNC being feautured for the first time on such a list. EMU was also the only university from the TRNC to appear on the 2016-2017 Academic Year World University Rankings. EMU’s achievements and TRNC featuring on the list had led to a series of reactions from South Cyprus.

EMU Faculty of Pharmacy Obtains Pharmacists
Council of Nigeria Accreditation
Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Pharmacy has been accredited by the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN). The inspection that took place between the 28-29 August 2017 was attended by PCN Chair Mohammed N. A. Elijah and Council Education and Internship Department Chair Dr. Idoko Anthony Sule.
Giving priority to their visit to the EMU Faculty of Pharmacy, the committee came together with Faculty Dean (a.) Assoc. Prof. Dr. H. Ozan Gülcan and Vice Dean Asst. Prof. Dr. Aybike Yektaoğlu.Within the framework of the two-day inspection and evaluation, Faculty Dean and academic staff members provided
the visiting group with information regarding the activities and education quality of the faculty, laboratories, accommodation and catering services provided for students, institutional structure, university and state support, sustainable quality and financial structure as well as the international status of the faculty.
During the inspection, the committee also came together with EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and Vice Rectors Prof. Dr.Cem Tanova and Prof. Dr. M. Yaşar Özden receiving information about accreditations and the emphasis placed on quality. Also present at the meeting that took place at the Rector’s Office were EMU Rector’s Coordinator Asst. Prof. Dr. Arif Akkeleş, Faculty of Pharmacy Dean (a.) Assoc. Prof. Dr. H. Ozan Gülcan, Vice Dean Asst. Prof. Dr. Aybike Yektaoğlu, former dean and academic staff member of the Faculty of Pharmacy Prof. Dr. Mustafa Fethi
Şahin and Director of the Personnel Affairs Department Özlem Avcı. Following their contacts, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria held a meeting at the EMU Rector’s Office where, Chair Mohammed N. A. Elijah provided information about the report they prepared based on their observations and added that as the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, they grant accreditation to EMU Faculty of Pharmacy. Elijah also provided information about the Council. Meanwhile, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Osam noted that they are proud and honored by the Faculty of Pharmacy’s important achievement. Prof. Dr. Osam stated that Nigerian graduates of the EMU Faculty of Pharmacy can start carrying out their professions immediately after completing the terms of their country. In his speech, Prof. Dr. Osam also emphasized that EMU is a university that invests in quality.
Another Accreditation for EMU SCT
Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), School of Computing and Technology (SCT) Information Technology (IT) postgraduate program has obtained ASIIN (Germany) accreditation. Carrying out a first for postgraduate programs EMU-SCT also obtained a EuroInf certificate of quality. With its newly obtained accreditation, SCT has raised its number of accredited programs to a grand total of 13. The SCT programs Electrical and Electronics Technology (2 and 3
year), Construction Technology (2 and 3 year), Computer Programming (2 and 3 year), Biomedical
Equipment Technology (2 and 3 year) and Mapping and Cadastrial Survey (2 year) had obtained accreditations last year.
EMU SCT Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa İlkan noted that the ASIIN accreditation obtained by the Information Technology Postgraduate program is yet another achievement of SCT. Stating that SCT was the first academic unit founded at EMU, Prof.
Dr. İlkan noted that they are also training intermediate staff. Defining accreditations as an examination process carried out by a third party to review standards, Prof. Dr. İlkan noted that they have obtained an accreditation valid in 28 EU nations. Prof. Dr. İlkan went on to describe accreditations as proof of quality in education. Stating that Germany is where vocational education is of the highest quality, Prof. Dr. İlkan provided a reminder that SCT’s FIBAA and
ASIIN accreditations are German accreditations.
Prof. Dr. İlkan indicated that the Information Systems program has an international ASIIN accreditation that will allow graduates to travel freely throughout the world especially in Europe. Prof. Dr. İlkan also pointed out that their quality education has been acknowledged by the certificate of quality EuroInf which was awarded by EQAINE.

Exalting Success from EMU “Z-Zero”
Technologically developed by EMU Faculty of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering and visually designed by EMU Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Department of Visual Arts and Visual Communication, the “Z-Zero” electric car has won the Design Award at the TÜBİTAK Efficiency Challenge Electric Vehicle – Elektromobil 2017 competition.
“Z-Zero” passed the technical and dynamic driving test at its first try on 21st – 24th August 2017 at Körfez Circuit in Turkey’s Kocaeli Province. In this international competition, “Z-Zero” competed with 70 teams from 54 universities on 27th August 2017. The competition aimed to determine the most energy efficient electric car. EMU “Z-Zero” completed the race at 20th place and won the Design Award in the area of mechanics and electronics, exalting the EMU family. The Design Award
is given to the team that has the superiority on domestic production, innovation, engineering and the mechanical design of the car. The award is evaluated by the technical design reports presented by the teams and examination during the race week.
“Z-Zero” Completely Developed By EMU
The electric car project “Z-Zero” under the leadership of EMU Faculty of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering Vice Chairman and Mechatronics Program Coordinator Assist. Prof. Dr. Davut Solyalı, includes a team especially formed by undergraduate and graduate students. The design and production was undertaken within the rules and criterion of TÜBİTAK and were completely done within EMU. The project aimed to produce the most efficient electric car to run with battery.
20th EMU Orientation
Days Begin
The 20th Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Orientation and Welcoming Days commenced on the 7th of September 2017. The Orientation Days set to continue until the 29th of September 2017 will be taking place under the sponsorship of North Cyprus Turkcell. The program offers new students a series of seminars and trips as well as an array of social and cultural activities to ease the adaptation process both to the university and to the environment. New students are being met at Ercan Airport as well as at the Famagusta and Kyrenia ports before being taken to their dormitories.
As part of the Orientation Days information desks have been set up for new students and their families outside the EMU-2 Dormitory, the Social and Cultural Activities Directorate, the Registrar’s Office and the Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School.
Within the framework of the 20th Orientation Days, film screenings will be taking place at the open-air cinema set up in front of EMU-2 dormitory every night at 8:00 p.m from the 15th to the 28th of September 2017. The film screenings will provide new students with the opportunity to meet other new students in a social context. New students will also be offered various tours within the TRNC, including a Famagusta tour on 22nd of September 2017, a Nicosia and Kyrenia tour on 23rd of September 2017, a Karpaz tour on 24th of September 2017 and an EMU campus
tour on 28th of September 2017. Assistants will also be taking part in the tours and will be available to answer any questions the students may have.
Valuable Seminars for New Students
The 20th EMU Orientation and Welcoming Days will also be offering seminars aimed towards the new students and their families. On the 22nd of September 2017, a seminar entitled “Life in North Cyprus” will be presented by the TRNC Police Department. On the 28th of September 2017 a seminar titled, “Richness in a Multicultural Environment” will be presented by EMU Psychological Counseling, Guidance and Research Center and a seminar titled “Life in an International Environment” will be presented by the International Office.
Welcoming Night
On the 29th September 2017 a “Welcoming Night” celebrating the arrival of newly registered students will be taking place. Commencing at 20:00 the Welcoming Night will also introduce to the new students different administrative and academic units as well as student clubs. Taking place at the EMU Atatürk Square the Welcoming Night will also host faculties’, schools’ and student clubs’ promotional activities as well as various sports competitions, stage performances, concerts and recreational activities. New students will have the opportunity to meet and socialize with other new students in a similar situation to themselves.

Ali Övgün to Work at
CERN
Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) continues to prove that it is of a world class standard via its graduates. EMU Business and Economics Faculty, Economics Department Undergraduate program graduate Mohammad Hormozzadeh has been accepted by one of the world’s leading universities. Hormozzadeh has gained acceptance from New York University where he will
be continuing his postgraduate education Hormozzadeh, will begin studying the Financial Engineering program at New York University, School of Engineering in the 2017-2018 Academic Year. With its long-term international collaborations with the world’s leading universities, EMU continues to provide its students the opportunity to study at the world’s best universities.
Eastern Mediterranean Universiy (EMU) Arts and Sciences Faculty, Physics Department Doctorate Program graduate Dr. Ali Övgün has been accepted by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) to carry out research on how black holes and wormholes can be discovered. Dr. Övgün will start working as a guest researcher at the Theory Department of CERN in October 2017.
After finishing his postgraduate education at the EMU Department of Physics, Dr. Övgün completed his doctorate program in 3.5 years, also publishing 14 Web of Science articles. Dr. Övgün who published a total of 39 articles in international physics journals, published 30 Web of Science articles and 9 articles are waiting to be published in WOS journals.
Dr. Övgün who worked at EMU for one year as a part-time academician after completing his doctorate degree, is currently working at CONICYT which is Chile’s equivalent of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. Participating in post-doctorate research projects at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso (PUCV) University in Valparaiso, Chile Dr. Övgün is currently working on a 500,000 TL (135,000 USD) project. Dr. Övgün will continue working as a Post-Doctorate Physics Researcher at PUCV between
the 15th of March 2017 and the 15th of March 2020.
“I owe my success to EMU”
Speaking on his CERN application process, Dr. Övgün noted that he was asked questions about his background and the schools he graduated from stating “I was asked for a list of the articles I have published. I received acceptance one month after submitting what was requested of me. It is easy to visit CERN as a tourist but not as a Guest Researcher that closely follows research and experiments, working together with other physicists. I would like to thank EMU, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Halilsoy who was my advisor at the university and our new Department Head Prof. Dr. İzzet Sakallı. I owe my success to them. I would also like to thank EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and everyone working at the University for their constant support.”
New Black hole Models will be Generated
Dr. Övgün listed his aims of going to CERN as exchanging ideas with physicists at the world’s leading theoretical and practical physics hub, observing experiments and generating new black hole and wormhole models based on these experiments. Dr. Övgün, who will be carrying out research at CERN throughout October, will be carrying out research with a different group at the Waterloo Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada during February.

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) was featured in the Sunday Supplement
of the Spanish Newspaper El- Pais. The article praised EMU touching upon
the university having over 20 thousand students from 106 different countries
also highlighting its international profile despite being located in an unrecognized country. The article also underlined the safe nature of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) whilst touching upon EMU’s quality education, accreditations and international achievements. El-Pais newspaper representatives María Hervás Pérez and Ana Nance visited Cyprus carrying out interviews with students from both sides of the island regarding the Cyrus problem. During their visit to EMU, the duo visited Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam in his office, receiving information about the university and also carrying out a video interview. The representatives received extensive information about EMU’s academic development and world ranking as well as its student and academic personnel profile. Hür-İş Trade Union visited Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam in his office. During the visit where head of the union Ahmet Çaluda was also present, information was provided about Hür-İş and their membership to the Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (Türk-İş).
Stating that Hür-İş is a federation that values education, Ahmet Çaluda noted that they are working on collaboration protocols with Turkish
Cypriot universities regarding discounts for the children of union members.
Speaking at the visit, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Osam provided information about EMU, stating that the university has signed many collaboration protocols with different institutions. The meeting also touched upon possible collaborations between the two institutions.
