World Engineering Day 2022 (WED2022) HACKATHON

A Global Competition for University Students

Objective The WED2022 HACKATHON is an international competition that aims to engage engineering students from universities around the world with the celebration of World Engineering Day in 2022. The Hackathon is hosted by the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) and its members and partners.

Background World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, 4th of March every year, was approved unanimously by the 40th UNESCO General Conference in November 2019. The inaugural World Engineering Day was celebrated on 4th March 2020. Since 2020, this Day has activated millions of people globally to celebrate and promote engineering and the work engineers are doing to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Outcomes This competition is a fast-paced simulation of a real-world project.

The WED2022 HACKATHON will encourage engineering students to work in teams towards engineering solutions for a global, real-world problem that is aligned to the WED2022 Theme:

Build Back Wiser – Engineering the Future.

Teams will work collaboratively on a problem to provide a set of solutions and deliverables within a short timeframe. Utilising their scientific and engineering knowledge, students will gain first-hand experience to develop their critical thinking, build new skill sets, push themselves out of their comfort zone and build lasting relationships.

Format of the HACKATHON

The World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) and its members and partners will identify some real-world problems that are directly related to the theme for WED2022 and will also involve solutions that advance some on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Engineering students at universities, technical institutions and other tertiary education facilities from around the world will be asked to build a team and develop a solution to one of the real- world problems offered.

Round 1 submission will be in PDF (electronic) format and will be judged.

Approximately 8 – 10 submissions will be identified as finalists and will progress to Round 2.

Round 2 submissions will be submitted in the form of a video presentation.

These finalists’ submissions will be aired during the WED2022 LIVE event, with the announcement of the winner to occur after all presentations have been aired around the world.
