PRODUCTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF FeCrCMn BASED COMPOSITE COATINGS BY TWIN WIRE ARC

SPRAYING

SUMMARY

In this study, it was focused on the investigation effect of process parameters of FeCrCMn based composite coatings produced by twin wire arc spraying technique with diffrent process parameters on abrasion wear performance of industrial components which in used severe abrasion environment. It was used Metco 8222Š (28Cr5CMn) cored wire as a coating wire in this study. FeCrCMn based composite coatings were produced by twin wire arc spraying technique with different process parameters such as amperage, voltage, primary gas pressure and spraying distance.

The coatings were investigated optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with EDS analysing methods. By x-ray diffraction (XRD) method, phases were determined in the coatings. Oxide and porosite amount of the coatings were indicated by using image analyzer (Image JŠ). Microhardnesses of coatings were measured with 20 N during 10 seconds and coating makro hardnesses of coatings were determined as HRA.

After characterization of coatings, M7C3 as Cr7C3, (Cr,Fe)7C3 and less amount Mn7C3 and M23C6 as (Cr,Fe)23C6 complex carbide were found in coating structures. It was DSSHDUHGWRFRQVLVWRIPDLQFRDWLQJSKDVHVZDVȖ± (Cr,Fe) + (Cr,Fe)23C6.

The abrasion tests of coatings which produced by different process parameters were carried out during 30 seconds according to ASTM G65-04 standard, Procedure A in abrasive tester which produced only this study.After abrasion tests, the surface of the coatings were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and EDS analys.

To determined of cored wire coatings abrasion wear performance, 13 Cr metallic wire coating and FeCrCMn based composite coating produce by twin wire spraying in optimum process parameteres were tested with abrasion test according ASTM G65-04, Procedur C during 30 minutes and compared with wear volume losses of two coatings.

In this study, it was found that process parameters affected on coating characteristics.

Bulk hardnesses of coatings were decreased when oxide amount was high. The coatings which had higher bulk hardness appeared to be higher abrasion performance. It was found that FeCrCMn based composite coatings had more than 50 % performance than 13 % Cr steel coating.
