Abstract: This research paper was an attempt to measure the social media usage of high school students during COVID - 19

pandemic. The objectives were: i) to find out the level of social media usage of high school students, ii) to find out, if there is any significant difference between boys and girls in their social media usage, iii) to find out, if there is any significant difference between rural and urban students in their social media usage, iv) to find out, if there is any significant difference among government, aided and self-financed schools students in their social media usage. Survey method was adopted for the study. The population of the study was high school students in Thoothukudi district. 326 high school students from 11 schools in Thoothukudi district were selected as sample by using stratified random sampling technique. The stratification was done by gender, locality of residence and Type of management. Social media scale (2021) was developed and validated by Maria Albin Leon and Sasipriya. Content validity was established. The reliability of the scale found is 0.78. Percentage analysis, t - test, F - tests were used for data analysis. The major finding was that there is significant difference between male and female in their social media usage.

1. Introduction

The World Health Organization announced the spread of COVID 19 in December 2019. To avoid the spreading of virus every one requested to maintain their social distance. In our society all the working sectors were followed the social distance. Education department is also one among it. Due to COVID 19 students are requested to stay at their home. They maintained their social distance from their teachers and school community. According to UNESCO, since the outbreak of COVID-19, 1.37 billion students in 138 countries worldwide have been affected due to the closure of schools and universities. To avoid this education deficiency the system tried to find out another way. That was online mode of education. They were trying to give the education in technological mode. Since the whole country is under lockdown, e - education is the best bet left.(Sumbul Jahangeer 2020). For which data base was very much needed. So e - education system transformed the students into internet world. In 2020, India had nearly 700 million internet users across the country (Sandhya Keelery 2020). School students were also included in it. Since social media platform was used more, in order to communicate with the students, they started using it in their day today life more and more. The present study measured the social media usage of High school students during this COVID 19 pandemic.

2. Statement of the Problem

The number of Smartphone users in India was estimated to reach over 760 million in 2021. About 70% students today own smart phones, according to a survey by software services firm TCS. The survey was conducted on nearly 17500 high school students across 14 Indian cities. 20% students said they use mobile phones to access internet. It is also emerged as fastest growing medium for accessing internet. According to Ajoy Mukherji, “The survey shows the increasing comfort levels that the post - millennial generation exhibit with digital technology social networking, smart phones and gaming.” So the investigator focused his studies social media studies of high school student.

3. Objectives

The objectives were:

i) To find out the level of social media usage of high school students.

ii) To find out, whether there is any significant difference between boys and girls in their social media usage. iii) To find out, whether there is any significant difference between rural and urban students in their social media usage.

iv) To find out, whether there is any significant difference among government, aided and self-financed schools students in their social media usage.

4. Methodology

The investigator selected High Students (IX and X Std) of Thoothukudi district as population for this study. 326 high school students were chosen as sample through stratified random sampling from 11 schools consisting 121 students from Government school, 106 students from Government aided school and 99 students from Self financed school. Social media scale (2021) was developed and validated by Maria Albin Leon and Sasipriya. Content validity was established. The reliability of the scale found was 0.78. Percentage analysis, t - test, F - tests were used for data analysis.

5. Data analysis

Null Hypothesis 1 : The level of social media usage of high school students during COVID -19 Pandemic is moderate.

It is inferred from above table that 47.9%, 36.5% and 15.6% of the high school students have low, moderate and high level of Media Utility respectively.

48.8%, 37.7% and 13.5% of the high school students have low, moderate and high level of personality development respectively.

45.7%, 37.7% and 16.6% of the high school students have low, moderate and high level of information fusion respectively.

60.3%, 31.3% and 18.4% of the high school students have low, moderate and high level of Social consciousness respectively.

58.8%, 28.7% and 18.4% of the high school students have low, moderate and high level of Media obsession respectively.

46.3%, 37.4% and 16.3% of the high school students have low, moderate and high level of social media usage respectively.

It is inferred from the above table that there is no significant difference between male and female high school students in their media utility and information fusion.

But there is significant difference between male and female high school students in their personality development, social consciousness, media obsession and social media usage.

While comparing the mean scores of male and female high school students, the male students (m= 26.28, 30.86, 28.03, 158.44) are better than the female. Students (m= 24.47, 27.12, 23.81, 148.28) in their personality development, social consciousness media obsession, social media usage respectively

Null Hypothesis 3 : There is no significant difference between rural and urban students in their social media usage.

It is inferred from the above table that there is no significant difference between rural and urban high school students in their media utility, personality development, information fusion, social consciousness, media obsession and social media usage.

It is inferred from the above table that there is no significance difference among government, aided and self finance high school students in their media utility, personality development and information fusion.

But there is significance difference among government, aided and self finance high school students in their social consciousness, media obsession and social media usage.

6. Findings

1. 46.3%, 37.4% and 16.3% of the high school students have low, moderate and high level of social media usage respectively.

2. There is significant difference between male and female high school students in their personality development, social consciousness, media obsession and social media usage.

3. There is no significant difference between rural and urban high school students in their media utility, personality development, information fusion, social consciousness, media obsession and social media usage.

4. There is significance difference among government, aided and self finance high school students in their social consciousness, media obsession and social media usage
