Mrs. Rebia T. Basokcu was born on the l

th of November,

1892

. She belongs to the Okcubasi Family, one of the oldest in Turkey. The Okcubasis were chief commanders of the Sultans Bow and Arrow Corps. She was educated privately and later graduated from the Teachers» College. From

1938

to 19^0, she studied Psychology at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France.

At 17 Mrs. Basokcu married the grandson of Vezir Nafiz Pasha, ex-Minister of Finance of Sultan Mahmut, but was divorced from him ten years later.

During the First World War, she was Secretary of the Bosporus Branch of the Red Crescent (Ked Cross). From 1928 to 1930, she was the President of the berlin Branch of the Society for the Protection of Children.

From 1920 to 19^0, she lived in Berlin and Paris where she worked to earn her living and travelled throughout Europe.

During World War II, she was in Paris when that city was occupied and returned to Turkey in 19*+1. Upon returning to Turkey, she wrote "How I ¿scaped from the Hell of Paris" and "My Twenty

Years in Europe". Both books were widely read and had great success. 'The second book went into several editions and the Ministry of

Education bought thousands of copies to be distributed in Turkish schools. She has written other books on her travels and on social questions.

From 19^6 to 1952, she was the correspondent for the Turkish political newspaper "Vatan" in Paris. She was accredited to the United Nations Press Section. In 1952, the French Ministry of Commerce invited Mrs. Basokcu to cross the Atlantic on the French Line and thus she came to the United States on the S.S. Liberte. Soon thereafter, she founded and worked for the American Turkish Cultural Committee for Children, Inc. 'The first Committee was
