THE CONSTANTIN GUYS EXHIBITION AT FLUSHING : BRILLIANT DRAWINGS BY “ THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS ” STAFF ARTIST DURING THE CRIMEAN WAR ; SHOWN IN HIS NATIVE TOWN.
C onstantin Guys (1802-1892). brilliant draughtsm an and w ater-colourist who acted as staff a rtist for The Illustrated London News during the Crimean W ar, just 100 years ago, was born a t Flushing ; and his m em ory has been honoured by an exhibition in his native tow n of 130 exam ples of his work. It opened in July and closes to-m orrow A ugust 22. The oeuvre of Guys consists entirely of drawings and water-colours, an d in the course of his adventurous life (he fought in Greece together with Lord Byron in 1823-24) he travelled in Spain, Turkey, E gypt and Germany, making drawings for The Illustrated London News, and he also recorded life in Paris and London during the Victorian period with brilliance and fidelity. He was th e subject of three notable articles by Charles Baudelaire in the Figaro
in 1863, in which the poet referred to him as “ le peintre de la vie moderne." The drawings in the Flushing exhibition—-th e first in the N etherlands to be devoted to him —have been lent by both public galleries and private collectors. The self-portrait of Cuys w ith two Sisters of C harity in the French t -p .-i! at Pera, Constantinople, during the Crimean W ar, was the basis of a awing 'blished | in our issue of Septem ber 30, 1854. In this connection i* interesting to recall th a t the Sisters of Mercy who staffed the Hospit-'*'0' *t. John and St. Elizabeth (now in Grove End Road), when it was fo u n d e ' "? were ten of th e Sisters of Charity from Bermondsey who had vo lu r V1® suggestion of Cardinal Manning, for the Crimea ; and had joined F’"’rence Nightingale s com pany of nurses.
