In Tu r k e y , t he c o n s o l i d a t i o n p e r i o d o f a l i ber al d e m o c r a c y in t he We s t e r n s e ns e has not c o me to an end. Si nce 1946, wh e n t he first c o mp e t i t i v e e l e c t i o n s we r e u n d e r t a k e n , t he p r o c e s s o f d e mo c r a t i z a t i o n has al ways been har d and pai nf ul . Th e c o s t s o f t he p r o c e s s we r e pai d by t he c i t i zens , in wh i c h t h r e e mi l i t a r y i n t e r v e n t i o n s (in 1971 t he r ul i ng p o w e r was left in t he h a n d s o f t he ci vi l i ans ) had vi ol a t e d bas i c h u ma n r i ght s and l i ber t i es.

In t he p o s t - 1980 er a wi t h a mo r e l i beral a p p r o a c h t hat Ozal has b r o u g h t , t he t a b o o s ha ve s t a r t e d to be q u e s t i o n e d in Tu r k e y . The me d i u m led to t he S e c o n d Re p u b l i c a r g u me n t s .
