BİLİNMEYEN BİR KERVANSARAY TİPİ (DÜĞER KERVANSARAYI) H . Baki K U N T E R , I — KERVANSARAYIN ÜZERİN DE BULUNDUĞU YOL :
a) Birinci kısım iki katlıdır. Cep hesi 29.40, derinliği 13.20 metredir.
b) ikinci kısım birinci kısma biti şik olup tek katlıdır. Uzunluğu 27.10, derinliği 13.20 metredir.
Her ikisinin cephe uzunluğu 56.50 metreyi bulmaktadır.
/// — BÂNİSÎ VE ÎNŞA. TARİHİ :
Mahallinde bu kervansarayın I I .
A NEW TYPE OF CARAVANSERAI (THE CARAVANSERAI AT DÜĞER)
1. THE ROAD ON WHICH THE CARAVANSERAI IS LOCATED :
The Düğer Caravanserai was built during the Ottomans, and brings us recent knowledge about, both its plan and structural characteristics, and the road on which it was situated.
The Caravanserai is on the Üs küdar İznik Yenişehir Akbiyik -Pazarcık - B o 2 h ö y ü k - İnönü - Kalbur cu - Saka - Düğer - Akören - Çay - Ak şehir road. Two more roads (Eskişe hir - Seyitgazi - Hüsrevpaşa - Bayat, road and İnönü - Ilıca - Kütahya - Ka-rahisar road) run on the north - south direction, one being on the west, and the other being on the east of the first road, and they all three meet at the Akşehir.
The road which passes by Seyit gazi is also known as the Hadj Road
or Aleppo road. The two latter roads have been used both for caravans and for army units in various expeditions. Hence theset wo roads are well kno^vn from the archive documents and the warious works.
On the other hand however, the site of the road on which our cara vanserai is located could only be de termined by means of a «Menzil Kay dı» (=Zone of Communication re cord) dated 986 H. found in the Arc hives of the Prime Ministry.
2. DESCRIPTION OF THE CA RAVANSERAI :
The Düğer Caravanserai is compo sed of two sections :
a) The first section is of two storeyed, measuring 29.40 meters in depth, and 13.20 meters in width.
I ranslated by ; Emre M A D R A N b The second section which is only one storeyed, adjacent to the first one measuring 27.10 meters in width, and 13.20 meters in depth.
The total length of the caravan serai is 56.50 meters. The walls of the first section are of cut stone whereas the ^valls of the other section are of rvibble stone. Both sections have cut stone roof covering.
First section is entered through a covered entrance. This place was used to accomodate the guards. There are large openinges on both sides for ob
servation and watch.
After the entrance, there are 4 square piers, out of cut stone which support 4 brick arches running on the east-west direction with equal spans. Upper floor of the caravanserai is set on these arches. The first floor is 6 meters high and covered with earth. It is understood that this place was used for hostlers and well trained riding horses. There are no vdndows in this floor, but two holes in the wall to keep watch on the adjoining stable section.
There are two other holes in the east wall looking outside. Judging from the height of these holes, it may be assumed that the hostlers slept on
wooden benchs. On the ground floor, there are three fire places on both sides of the door. These built-in fire places provide ventilation. All of the fireplaces have chinoney stacks on the roof. There are also small nitches in the walls for the hostlers,
A stone straircase in front of the entrance at the ground floor leads up
to a corridor along tibe length oS first floor. This «oridor is 4 fltfcters'l^

•«'^ th immACTERISTICS OF THE ÜOĞEE emAVANSERAI :
•jiij I8ie.»main characteristics of the i^uqaY^^^rsyt consist of the fact that
it has two floors; there are windows .OPi^ljie fatsade of the upper floor;
heating i s provided with fire places in ^^eTTopms; there are washing places; ^s^e^'Poat^Dig technique used on the
walls and roof; the stable section has •been btlilt separately, and has a pri-^v&tö^^çaıtrance; well hidden and effi cient ventilation is provided for both septions; the wide and high stable has no suj^rts which give chance to have a big space.
• The above characteristics of Dü ğer Caravtoserai are important and worthy of interest. It is evident that, no definite result can be obtained on the subject called «Anatohan Caravan serais and their plan types» without studying all available documentation about them or without examining the caravanserais which have not been seen so far.
