İstanbul’da, özellikle sur içi İstanbul’unda, yakın
zamana kadar hiçbir mahalle yoktu ki, çeşmesi ol

Piping water from springs and constructing fountains were regarded as among the most honourable acts o f charity, and no charge was made fo r using the water. Since, like the

To console the child she placed a coin in her hand, but the child explained that she was crying not over the jar but because she would not be able to take the water home. ya da ev içlerinde akar suyun şırıltısını dinlemek
için “selsebil” denen küçük çeşmecikler yaptırırlar

Bugün artık villaların bahçelerine, hatta evlere sel

W h e re v e r you are wandering in Istanbul you are likely to come across old fountains, usually set into walls, but some times in the form o f freestanding structures. Numerous sebils and a few o f the decorative cascading fountains known as selsebils have also survived. The latter were used in gardens o r sometimes indoors, and were exqui site works o f art. W hat a pity it is that such fountains are no longer made to adorn houses and gardens. W e can only regret that such delightful features o f the past have been discarded so ruthlessly, instead o f evolving
them fo r our pleasure today. .
