Preface

This volume contains contributions based on the lectures delivered at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Quantum Communication and Information Technologies (NATO-ASI QCIT) held in Turkey, 3-14 June, 2002. This Insti-tute, hosted by Bilkent University, was attended by about 70 participants from all over the world. There was also a high level of participation by graduate students and post-docs, who greatly benefited from the opportunity to attend a world-class meeting. There was very active audience participation. Lectures were conducted in the morning and in the afternoon and this left the midday and evening free for informal discussions. The lectures were delivered by 15 invited lecturers, representing the major experimental and theoretical groups working in the field. The Conference was hosted in Bilkent University (Ankara) during the first week of activity and then in Club Hotel Sera (Antalya). The cul-tural program included excursions to Cappadocia and to the ancient cities of Aspendos and Perge on the Mediterranean Coast.

The importance of investigations in the field of quantum communications and quantum information processing and their implementations is well known. Remarkable recent developments in the field, in particular realization of quan-tum teleportation teleportation and quanquan-tum communication channels based on the use of entangled states, entangled states and discovery of quantum comput-ing Quantum computcomput-ing algorithms, have made quantum information one of the most important branches of modern physics and technologies. Every year, there are a number of Workshops, Conferences, and Summer Schools on quan-tum information. The distinguishing feature of NATO-ASI QCIT is that the discussion of fundamentals was tightly interlaced with technological problems. The editors would like to thank the lecturers who provided notes for publi-cation within the deadline. We especially thank the secretaries of the meeting Emine Benderlioglu and Ay§e Bulut and on behalf of the participants we thank Banu Sabrioglu who organized almost everything during the Antalya part of the meeting. We wish to thank the various organizations that have provided either financial or technical support. These include: Office of the President of Bilkent University, the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and Ozcivelek Tourism.
