Abstract: The study mainly aims to understand customer satisfaction with respect to the cable service

provided by cable television operators during the period of Covid pandemic with respect to Kerala.

Key words: Cable, Cable Television, Cable Operator, Fibre -Optic Cables, Coaxial Cables. Introduction

Cable televisions provide television programme to consumers premises through radio frequency signals which is transmitted through coaxial cables and presently through fibre -optic cables. The shortened for used for cable television is CATV. Cable television was used in USA in the late 40s to improve reception of commercial network broadcasts. Since then, there has been a mushrooming of cable television which offers special services.

The first CATV system was set up by Robert J Tarion in Lansford, Pennsylvania in 1950. In the spring of 1979, the 96th congress of the United States and the National Cable Television Association recognized John Walson as the founder of the cable television industry.

Television Network companies broadcast their TV shows through satellite. Cable operators also called multi system operators (MSO) install head-ends (control centres for cable network) for aggregation of TV channels received from different satellites. They may mix this with content from other sources such as broadband connections, local bombs, etc. To form a bouquet of channels and then distribute to homes using coaxial cable (hence, the name cable TV) network installed underground or hung utility poles. For getting cable television, one needs to subscribe to a cable company which will then connect a simple coaxial cable from the wall outlet to the television sets. One has to then program his/her cable ready television sets to receive the cable channels. In case one does not have a cable ready television then one needs to install a device called a converter box. This way the programme reaches the entire customers who are located at different distance. Success of a cable television depends on the service provided by the cable TV operator.

In Kerala the cable television works under five MSO (multiple-system operator) who provide signals to various service providers like AsiaNet, Kerala Vision, Bhoomika, Den etc. MSO will provide service to the distributor, from there to sub distributors located in different districts, from sub distributors to LCO (Local Cable Operators) and from there to the ultimate customers who are located in different localities.

In Kerala the largest cable service provider is AsiaNet Digital service who offers the latest digital technology with 240 television channels. Other major cable service provider includes Kerala Vision, Bhoomika, Den etc.
