Gerekçe:

The aim of the course is to outline basic concepts that account for new physical phenomena brought into existence by the reduced size and dimensionality characteristic of novel semiconductor structures. These concepts are developed as a natural extension of the ideas normally used to describe electronic structure and physical properties of macroscopic crystalline solids and semiconductor devices. A substantial portion of the course is devoted to representative examples of the application of such concepts in electronic and optical devices.

CONTENTS:

Description of non-interacting electrons in periodic structures: free-electron model, quantum states of electrons interacting with a weak periodic potential,: nearly-free- electron band structure, localized representation of electron states in solids: tight-binding model, basic observable properties of semiconductor materials, electronic structure of technologically important semiconductors, physics of semiconductor interfaces, quantum wells, superlattices, quantum wires and dots, electron transport in microstructures, optical properties of microstructures, fabrication and characterization of semiconductor microstructures, application of semiconductor microstructures in electronic devices, application of semiconductor microstructures in optoelectronics
