3.3 Reliability and Validity

Reliability is the degree to which an instrument measures the same way each time it is used under the same condition with the same subjects. Validity is the strength of conclusions, inferences or propositions. For reliability and internal consistency, the researcher calculated Cronbach alpha as 0.837. The material used for data collection was therefore considered to be reliable.

3.4 Materials

For this research study, a questionnaire (see Appendix, page 59) carefully designed by the researcher was used as a means of data collection. The questionnaire was written in

English. The questionnaire consisted of two parts. In the first part, there were questions about the demographic information. In the second part, there were fourteen statements, two "yes/no"

questions and one open ended question about using educational technology in the EFL classrooms. The statements were related to the opinions of the teachers towards using educational technology, educational technology materials and resources, using educational technology in order to teach the four language skills and how using educational technology motivates the students.

The questionnaire used a five-point Likert-scale by which participants were asked to indicate their responses concerning the extent they agreed and how often they did the activity stated in each statement. The scale is from one to five where one is strongly disagree, two is disagree, three is neutral, four is agree and five is strongly agree. Participant responses were also coded by using another five-point Likert-scale, where one is never, two is almost never, three is sometimes, four is often, and five is always. Therefore, the participants were asked to circle the appropriate number for each statement they agree with.

3.5 Procedures

For the present study, the researcher first contacted the headmaster of the private college who allowed the researcher to conduct the survey. After getting the permission from the headmaster, information about the aims of the study were explained to all of the English language teachers in the school. The questionnaires were handed to the participants who accepted to participate in the research. The researcher was present to explain any unclear questions and statements. After the questionnaires were filled they were collected back by the researcher.

The questionnaires were analyzed by the researcher and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used.

3.6 Data Analysis

The data was analysed quantitatively. The quantitative analysis of data was conducted by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 15.0 for Windows Evaluation) programme. The Descriptive Statistics was used to find out the percentages and the frequencies among the different groups within each variable. The responses to the questionnaire were computed and the frequencies, means, mean differences and standard deviations were calculated by using the same test.

The One Sample T-Test was used to find out significant differences in the levels of the variables between the native speakers of English language teachers and native speakers of Turkish of the private college in Northern Cyprus.

3.7 Limitations

The participants of the study were 40 English language teachers working for the Near East Junior College in North Cyprus. Two of the teachers were absent and six of the teachers did not want to participate in the study. Thus a total of 32 questionnaires were answered and returned back to the researcher. This study was based on just one school and the findings would be different for all language teachers. The results were only for a local school.

3.8 Conclusion

This chapter provided demographic information about the participants and explanations about the procedures involved in the data collection and analysis of the study. In the next chapter, results of the statistical analysis were presented.
