Gar lokantası 1950-60 yıllarında, Sirkeci ve civarının kafası nın pencerelerini her türlü esnaflığa ve işe açmış kalabalığı ile, uğraşı gazetecilik v e her türlü kitap yazıcılığı v e çevir menlik olan bir elit kelime kuyumcu
su grubun uğrak yeri idi.
Gar lokantası, hem Sirkeci’nin tüm banliyölere açık hinterlandı ile, hem g e ce n in ilerlem iş saatlerini Beyoğ- lu’nda söndürecekler, hem de vapur la karşı yakaya geçecek ler için ideal bir alkole başlama yeri idi.
Osmanlı sarhoşluklarım hâlâ saklayan antikliği, yüksek tavanları ve gizem li m im arîsi, m ü d a vim lerin in “ full-al- k o l’ e rağmen b eyefendiliklerini ko ruma gustosu ve dünya tatlısı badana kafalı m üstecir Urfalı Razaman'ı ile Gar lokantası, anılan tarihte İstan bul'un en önem li dem istasyonların dan biri idi. Saat 10.30-11.00’e doğ ru elleri yataktan kalkar kalkmaz tit re y e n a lk o lik le r d u b le ta ze lem ek için gelir, öğlen yemeklerini gümrük komisyoncuları oto satıcıları ve par çacılar eşliğin d e bir-iki kadeh rakı refakâtinde savarlar, akşam güneşi yüksek binların arkasına düşünce, Bab-ı Â li’nin ağır toplan ile kitapev- lerinin yazar v e çevirm enleri sökün ederdi.
Akşam Gazetesi’nde birlikte çalıştı ğım, iki rakı kadehini hergün tokuş tuğumuz Orhan M enem encioğlu ile, o tarihte müşterek bir masa kurmuş tuk, Gar’da... İlk tanıdığım ız edebi yat büyüğü, Akşam ın dış haberler müdürü Selahattin H ila v ’dı o sıra lar...
H ilav, Tristian T ’Za ra’ dan, A n d re Bretton’dan, Sartre’dan gerçeküstü- cü Fransızca çeviriler yapar, masada vokta ve mevsim aksesuan ile birlik te, kitabın aslı ve Türkçe’ye aktara cağı boş kağıtlar bulunurdu. Son derece dikkatli v e titiz çalışma sı, masanın bir yanma akademik bir kişilik kazandırırken, öteki yanı ile b ize laf yetiştiren bir alaturka h oporlör olurdu.
Fethi Naci, Atilla Tokatlı, şair Edip Cansever ve ekibi başka bir masada, “Türkiye’de roman var m ı yok mu?” tartışması na kafa açarlar, Edip Cansever çok sıkça, “sporun şairi” diye laf sallardı, bana..
In the 1950s and 1960s, the Station Restaurant at Sirkeci train station was the meeting place f o r journalists, writers, translators, and all those other elite jewellers o f the written word, who stood out from among the crowds dedicated to business and trade in Sirkeci and its environs.
A s the m ain station f o r Ista n b u l’s western hinterland o f suburbs, conve niently close to Beyoğlu on the other side o f the Golden Horn whose night clubs, theatres and cinemas offered a night out on the town, and just a step away fro m the ferryboat terminals f o r those whose homes were on the opposite shore o f the Bosphorus, Sirkeci was the perfect place f o r an early evening drink.
W ith its p e rv a s iv e m e m o ries o f O ttom an p e rio d tipplers, oldfash- ioned decor, high ceilings and archi tectural mystique, a clientele o f gen tlemen who remained so even after imbibing their f ill o f alcohol, and the g o o d n a tu re d p r o p r ie t o r U rfa lı Ram azan, whose h a ir seemed to have been whitewashed, the Station Restaurant was one o f Is ta n b u l’s fo re m o s t tip p lin g stations at that time. Alcoholics whose hands began to shake the moment they got out o f bed would arrive around 10.30 o r 11.00 f o r a double rakı, followed by customs agents, car dealers and spare parts merchants who tossed o ff a cou ple o f glasses o f rakı with their lunch. Then as the evening sun sank behind the ta ll o ffic e blocks, the heavy weights o f the Turkish press, writers and translators would make their appearance.
At that time I and Orhan Menemen cio ğ lu were w o rk in g tog eth er at Akşam newspaper, and every evening clinked two glasses o f rakı together at the same table in the Station Restau rant. The first literary pundit we had met was Selahattin Hilav, fo re ig n news editor o f Akşam. Hilav did translations o f French sur realist literature by Tristian T’Zara, Andre Bretton and Sartre, and his table would be equipped not only with vodka and the accessories o f the season, but also the book he was translating at the time, and empty paper on which

G e c e P osta sı’ nın C u m hu riyet dönem inin sonlarındaki yazı iş leri müdürü Sait Kesterli, yarım şişe Kulüb ünü tren ler gören , dış peronda içer, o eski ve yeni gazete tartışması açıldığında “es kiler daha itibarlı id i” d er ve su anektodu anlatırdı:
“Bizim zamanımızda bedava suyu ke sildiği için Terkos’a iki çavelye attık tan sonra fotoğraf çekip G ölde do muz leşi çıktı!’ diye neşriyat yapıldı ğında, B elediye biribirine girer ve Bab-ı Â li’de özü r d ileye c ek adam ararlardı.”

He worked away with such concentration that his table took on an academic air. This was offset, however, by his habit o f butting in on our conver sation like a loudspeaker. A t another table were

as the “poet o f sport’’.
The novelist Oğuz Atay would sit alone. He was usually absorbed in thought and silent, seeking original subjects through the cigarette smoke. I would not be surprised i f the tar black pes
simism o f his “The Lost Ones” and the sloganis- tic candor o f his “Novel o f a Scientist” had flowered in the Station Restaurant.
Sait Kesterli, last editor o f Gece Postası, would drink his half bottle o f Külüb rakı at one o f the tables outside on the platform where he could see the trains. When debate flared up about whether the old o r new newspapers were better, he would claim that the old carried more clout, and tell the follow ing anecdote: “In our time, when the water was cut o ff and journalists threw a couple offish baskets into the reservoir, and then published their photograph with the headline “Dead Pig in R eservoir!”, the m u n icip a lity would be turned upside down, and rush to send an'offi cial to the newspaper to apologise. ”
When M u za ffer Buyrukçu, Z a fer Sülek, A f if Yesari and Sefa Önal gathered around another table, literature and art would be transformed into two different striptease acts with western and eastern legs. Because Buyrukçu paid the bill, his table would declare him “novelist o f the century", at which Yesari would pick up the map o f New York open in fro n t o f him and depart f o r anoth er tâble to write the next chapter o f Mike Ham mer because they were ruining his concentra tion.
Abdulbaki Gökpınarlı and Orhan Menemen- cioğlu never saw eye to eye on theological mat ters, and one’s defence o f Hazreti A li countered by the other’s claim o f Muaviye’s rightful sta
tus would set the table in an uproar. Throwing aside the dignity his advanced age called for, Gökpınarlı would challenge Menemencioğlu to a duel then and there in the station. Nusret Sefa Coşkun was fo rm e r Republican
People’s Party big shot, one o f the spotless moral foundation stones o f Turkish politics and form er lead writer f o r Yeni Sabah news paper. I think this literary hullabaloo at the
Station Restaurant pu t paid to what he had intended to be a tranquil retirement in a cheap hotel room in Sirkeci.
