CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.0 Presentation

This chapter of the thesis gives detailed information on the background of the study, followed by the research questions, the aim of the study, the significance of the study and an overview of the study.

1.1 Background of the Study

English is the dominant language of the world and now it is the most official means of communication for around two billion people around the globe. Although English has become the centre focus of all societies, teaching English has become very difficult for primary school teachers. It is getting hard to keep children involved in lessons that are based on traditional methods of teacher centred classrooms conducted with every material such as: whiteboards and course books. Technological advances offer more attractive lessons for primary school English language teachers in order to keep their students involved in lessons.

Nowadays, it is obvious that educational technology plays a major role in school curriculum therefore teachers have to adapt educational technologies into their lessons.

Educational technology is spreading fast and must be recognized by teachers in order to integrate it into their lesson plans for better and more effective teaching. Adelsberger, Kinshuk, Pawlowski and Sampson (2008) indicate that:

The advance of electronic technologies throughout the past century has encouraged corresponding interest in potential applications of these technologies in schools.

Thomas Edison, for example, expressed a hope that invention of the motion picture might revolutionize schools. The motion picture did not change schools, nor any other twentieth century technologies such as: radio, educational television, the audio and video recorder, etc. The reasons for this are embedded both in the structure of schools and in the nature of the electronic media. Therefore it is needed to understand past limitations and future potential of educational technology in schools (p. 345).
