INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON

MUSTAFA KEMAL PASHA’S TRANSITION TO ANATOLIA AND CONGRESSES ON THE CENTENARY OF NATIONAL STRUGGLE

24-26 April 2019 / ERZURUM

An international symposium hosted by Atatürk University and entitled

“International Symposium On Mustafa Kemal Pasha’s Transition To Anatolia And Congresses On The Centenary Of National Struggle” is going to be held with the participation of scholars from domestic and foreign universities, researchers from other institutions and organizations in Erzurum on 24-26 April by Atatürk Supreme Council for Culture, Language and History – Atatürk Research Center.

Turkish national struggle is undoubtedly the most significant era of the recent Turkish history during which the foundations of the Republic of Turkey and its main principles were laid. Such basic principles of public law as national sovereignty, democracy, the superior position of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, which constitute the core of the Republic of Turkey, were formed in this historic period in which the Turkish nation led its fight for independence. As is known, the year 1919 forms the most important process of the organization phase of the National Campaign. During this process, while a great deal of the homeland was under occupation on one hand, the foundations of the “National Independence Movement” were laid on the other and particularly with the advent of Mustafa Kemal as the Inspector of the 9th Army in Anatolia on May 19, 1919, the objectives and methods of the National Struggle were determined with Erzurum and Sivas congresses following the Amasya Circular. The developments in 1919 not only paved way for the establishment of the Committee of Representation, the first executive branch, but also placed Mustafa Kemal on the stage of history as the leader of the Turkish National Struggle and the Turkish nation.

Due to the fact that 2019 marks the centenary of all these significant events, it is planned to address and discuss papers that are based on recent interpretations and findings within the framework of a symposium covering the military, political and social developments starting from the signing of the Armistice of Mudros till the establishment of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.

Papers to be sent in the context of the main themes of the symposium are supposed to be predicated on archival documents and recent interpretations.
