THE CENTENARY OF THE INAUGURATION OF THE GRAND NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF TURKEY:
INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON DEMOCRACY IN TURKEY FROM THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE TO THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY
11-14 March 2020 / EDİRNE
An international symposium entitled “The Centenary of the Inauguration of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey: Democracy in Turkey from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey”, hosted by Trakya University, is going to be held with the collaboration of Atatürk Research Center in Edirne on 11-14 March 2020.
Having existed in the history of many nations for a long time, the notion and practice of democracy have almost 200 years of historical development in Turkey. The process which is considered to have started with the Charter of Alliance (Sened-i İttifak) during the Ottoman Empire and which progressed through the proclamation of the Ottoman Constitution of 1876 (Kânûn-ı Esâsî) leading to the beginning of democratic pluralism both politically and socio- culturally after the Second Constitutional Era in 1908, continued following the National Campaign and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey.
The inauguration of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in Ankara is one of the highlights of the recent Turkish history throughout this process. Basic principles of public law such as national sovereignty, public administration, the superior position of the GNAT, which constitute the essence of the Republic of Turkey, attained the field of application with the opening of the GNAT. The parliament, with a background of about 140 years, is the most important institution in the history of Turkish democracy. The Turkish War of Independence was based on and legitimized by this very Assembly.
The symposium, aiming at addressing the history of Turkey's democracy from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic and focusing on the ups and downs of the process, has the objective to throw light on the unknown or lesser-known aspects of the history of democracy of Turkey.
Papers are supposed to be original and it is required that they have not been presented or printed before and that they are not titles, subtitles or parts of a published book or a thesis even though the thesis has not been published.
