During the past century it has become styl ish to move out of cities—to enjoy those pas toral fruits which success earned in a metropo lis can afford. Istanbul is no different. Those who can leave the inner-city's conveniences and congestion and move up the Bosphorus toward the Black Sea. There is a definite corre lation between wealth and waterview. Similarly, wonderful vistas and clearer air have sent many across the water to the Anatolian side. From there one not only has spectacular pano ramas of the Golden Horn's necklace of tow ers and minarets, but to the south there is the vast blue of the Marmara speckled with the Princes Islands. Those who make that bumper-to-bumper Bosphorus Bridge com mute from Anatolia have taken their creature comforts with them, and then some.
The tourist who wishes to sample this good life should make a half-day excursion to sub urban Kadıköy’s Bağdat Caddesi. This boule vard which once led the way to Baghdad and
all the treasures of the East, now offers shop ping bounty a little closer to home. Many of the city’s best specialty shops have branches here. They are sprinkled between boutiques offering the plus haute in men’s and women’s wear. Sportswear has been refined to an art.
Turkish shopping goes hand in hand with pastry shops, the latter providing the neces sary fuel for the foray. And the pastry shops of Bağdat Caddesi, again including the city's best names, have taken full advantage of deeply set-back buildings to create lively outdoor cafes. One Is expected to linger over an impos ing confection of sugar, butter, cream and chocolate. Afternoon tea is essential to the city's late dining hour. Being 'seen' is part of the game. The sidewalks are wide and the plane trees provide broad-leafed, protective shade. Bağdat Caddesi is a place to stroll, savor and splurge.
Another short sojourn, once one Is across the water, is to Villa Bosphorus, after Beylerbey Palace, just to the north of the bridge. Here a mini-bazaar has been created to provide
one-stop shopping. This is operated by the same people who have Bazaar 54 near the Covered Bazaar. The villa is easily accessible by taxi. TO GET THERE: Ferries leave frequently from the Number 4 Pier at Eminönü. Once on the other side, a taxi ride to Göztepe, Bağdat Cad desi should take about 10 minutes. Returning, ask the driver for Eminönü feribot, Kadıköy. With plenty of time, take a bus back across the water. Ride any marked “ Beşiktaş" to the end o f the line. This is 10 minutes by taxi from the Hilton.
