The motifs on the spectacular tiles include more than forty differ ent tulip motifs alone.

Since Rüstem Paşa was almost as rich a n d p o w e r fu l as the sultan him self how was he to reflect this in the mosque he fo u n d ed?
The answer to this question lay in the m o sq u e’s d eco ra tion. Mimar Sinan was an a rch itect who avoided extra vagant decoration in his b u ild in g s. Even the Süleyma niye Mosque which he built fo r Süley m an the M a g n if ic e n t m a d e re stra in ed , in d e e d m in im a l, use o f tiles. Rüstern Paşa Mosque has been damaged several times over the centuries by fires and earthquakes, but each time the tiles h ave been c a r e fu lly rep la ced . The mosque was last restored in the 1990s, when measures were taken to strengthen the bonds o f the tile panels, and errors made during previous repairs were cor rected.
In the golden age o f Ottoman tile mak ing, a bright coral red and emerald green were added to the tr a d itio n a l p a le tte o f turquoise a n d cobalt blue.

Opium seed pods are another fascinating motif which is repeated several times in this panel. This representation o f spring is fram ed at the top by an arched knotted band, so forming a small prayer niche fo r those praying in the por tico to turn towards.
