A new collaboration protocol has been signed by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and the University of Bologna that foresees collaboration in the field of Comparative Legal Systems via a joint master’s program without a thesis. The said protocol was signed at the University of Bologna on the 12th

of July 2018 by EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and University of Bologna Rector Prof. Dr. Francesco Ubertini. In previous years there were also academic collaborations and student exchange programs between the two universities. In a statement Prof. Dr. Osam noted: “I am very happy to have signed

another historical document for our university. We have signed this protocol to further our collaboration with the University of Bologna which is always amongst the best universities in the world. The new protocol signed with Rector Prof. Dr. Francesco Ubertini will be a yardstick for our university and academia

in our country. I sincerely thank everyone who contributed to the development of our collaboration.” EMU Vice Rector for International Affairs and Promotion Prof. Dr. Cem Tanova and Faculty of Law Vice Dean Asst. Prof. Dr. Arzu Alibaba were also present during the collaboration protocol signature ceremony.

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam’s 11th of July Press Day statement reads as follows: “On this meaningful day that is celebrated as Press Day because Cyprus’s first Turkish language newspaper Saded Newspaper was published for the first time on the 11th of July 1889, I sincerely wish all members of press who carry out their profession in accordance to ethical principles a happy Press Day whilst also wishing the continuation of the Turkish Cypriot Press’s success in relation to universal press principles.

NEW COLLABORATION PROTOCOL SIGNED BY EMU AND

UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNA

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman visited the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) within the scope of the “Equal Opportunities Project” coordinated by the TRNC Youth Department operating under the Prime Minister’s Office, in collaboration with EMU. The project is aimed towards high school students receiving an education at TRNC state schools. Erhürman met with the said students at the EMU Senate Hall on Monday, the 9th of July 2018 at 10:00 Delivering the opening speech of the meeting, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam highlighted his belief that this project is very important indicating that EMU always set goals to obtain the very best. Prof. Dr. Osam concluded by wishing luck to all students involved in the project and thanking members of academic staff. EMU Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Halit Tanju Besler provided information

about the course content stating that the courses will be very useful for the students. In a speech of his own TRNC Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman noted: “I feel like I am home. I am very happy to be a part of this project.” Describing their aim as providing equal opportunities for public and private school students Erhürman relayed his belief that the high school students will be guided by the education they receive in the summer period that will cover range of different subjects. Education will be provided to high school students Free education courses in a range

of subjects will be provided to high school students receiving an education at TRNC state schools selected by the Youth Department according to certain criteria. During the summer, courses will be provided on subjects such as Humanoid Robot Programming and Control, Fundamental Robot Design and Application, Microcontroller

Programing (Arduino), Introduction to Astronomy, Rhino, AutoCAD, Geographic Information Systems, HTML and Web Design. The education courses that will be delivered by members of EMU academic staff will be taking place on the EMU

campus between the 9th of July and the 1st of September 2018.

Before the meeting, Erhürman came together with Prof. Dr. Osam at 09:00 receiving information about the latest developments at the university. Also present during the said meeting were TRNC Prime Ministry Chief of Cabinet Mustafa Ergüven, Youth Department Director Şifa Çolakoğlu, EMU Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Halit Tanju Besler, Prof. Dr. Naciye Doratlı and Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu as well as Rector’s Coordinator Asst. Prof. Dr. Arif Akkeleş.

An Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) organization, the 3rd Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) International Choral Festival commenced with an opening ceremony at the Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Hall on Monday, the 9th of July 2018 at 17:00. Amongst the many in attendance were TRNC Parliamentary Speaker Teberrüken Uluçay, Minister of Tourism and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu, Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Erkut Şahali, Famagusta District Governor Dürdane Acı, Famagusta Mayor

İsmail Arter, TRNC Ministry of Finance Principal Clerk Anıl Kaya, EMU Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Halit Tanju Besler, Prof. Dr. Naciye Doratlı and Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu as well as many deans and department chairs. The festival commenced with a Cyprus Dance Education Center dance show after the screening of EMU’s Promotional Film. This was followed by a promotional video featuring the attending choirs. Speaking at the opening of the festival EMU Faculty of Education, Department of Fine Arts Education academic staff member, Festival

Director and conductor Erkan Dağlı welcomed everyone to the festival and thanked them for their participation. Dağlı described the festival’s primary theme as sharing love and art’s intrinsic emotions with all generations from Turkey and other nations.

“I Believe That It Will Solidify Friendships”

EMU Faculty of Education, Department of Fine Arts Education Chair Prof. Memduh Özdemir highlighted his belief that artistic beauty will be shared and friendships solidified during the festival.

Providing information about the Faculty of Education, Prof. Özdemir thanked everyone involved in the organization of the festival indicating that he hopes to meet at other festivals. In a speech of his own Famagusta Mayor İsmail Arter stated “Firstly, I am very happy about such an event taking place in our city. Famagusta is the capital of art and culture. As a result of the recent collaboration protocol signed with EMU I believe that we can now call our city a capital of education too.” >>p.3

“Bringing all Forms Art to the Community is an Inextricable Vision”

EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam stated that bringing all forms art to the community is an inextricable vision of EMU in addition to generating knowledge: “We will continue to value art and follow in the path of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk”. Indicating that the festival is becoming very important for the country and university, Prof. Dr. Osam wished everyone a good festival. Prof. Dr. Osam concluded his speech by stating: “Try to obtain a good understanding of the TRNC and Turkish Cypriots so that hand in hand our relationship and brotherhood can reach a peak level.”

“It is turning into a Massive Organization”

TRNC Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Erkut Şahali welcomed everyone to the festival and drew attention to the fact that it is turning into a massive organization as it continues to develop each year. Stating that the new aim of the festival is to become an international organization that will include the participation of more than two nations, Şahali highlighted that they are ready to do all they can in order to make this goal become reality.

“We Will Continue to Contribute to Events”

TRNC Minister of Tourism and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu indicated

that they will continue contributing to such events and advised the participants to see the natural beauty of the island in regions outside of Famagusta as well. Ataoğlu relayed his belief that they will meet again at other organizations and thanked all involved in the fruition of this one.

TRNC Parliamentary Speaker Teberrüken Uluçay stated that he believes the festival will be very enjoyable and that Famagusta will be blown away by beautiful of choral music. Uluçay noted that promotion

is very important for the country’s development and tourism, highlighting that culture/art activities and festivals are very important in terms of economic development as well as culture. Following the opening speeches, the “Eastern Mediterranean University Service to Choral Music Award” was presented to EMU Faculty of Education, Department of Fine Arts Education Chair and composer Prof. Memduh Özdemir, Turkish composer Asst. Prof. Dr. Nedim Yıldız and Asst. Prof. Dr. Aykut Önder Sarıçiftçi by EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam. The participating choirs performed the Cypriot ballad ‘’Bahçada Guzu’’ in unison. The ballad was arranged by Turkish Cypriot composer Oskay Hoca. After this performance a concert was delivered by the “Papageorgio String Quartet”, a quartet that has performed at numerous organizations on both the north and south of the island since 2011. After the opening ceremony choral music was performed by the KPKD Othello Polyphonic Choir, Aksaray University Chamber Choir, Ankara Development Choir and Cyprus Folk Songs Association Choir .The festival will be continuing until the 14th of July 2018.

EMU’S 3RD TRNC INTERNATIONAL CHORAL

FESTIVAL BEGINS

Organized by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Vice Rector’s Office for International Affairs and Promotion with Turkish Airlines Sponsorship, the 9th annual EMU International Summer School

is taking place with the participation of more than 500 students from 17 different countries. Over 500 students from different age groups have travelled from Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Germany, Kazakhstan,

Turkmenistan, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Morocco, Belarus, England, Kirgizstan, Uzbekistan and Palestine to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) where they will be receiving English language education. The students will be participating in an enjoyable summer experience that will include numerous activities in addition to the courses delivered by EMU Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School academic staff. The summer school students have the opportunity to witness university life and Cypriot culture first hand by participating in cultural, artistic and sporting activities in addition to the English language education they receive. The 9th International Summer School students get to enjoy the clear blue sea and sun at

the EMU Beach Club as well as participate in weekly cultural trips to different regions of the island.

Brilliant Gala Night

Within the scope of the 9th EMU International Summer School “The Gala Night 2018” took place at the EMU Beach Club on Thursday, the 5th of July 2018. The talents of students were showcased with artistic performances and dance choreographies. The gala night was attended by International Summer School students, university personnel and EMU International Summer School sponsors. The performances supported by the EMU International Office produced colorful scenes and enjoyable activities took place. The 9th EMU International Summer School will be continuing until the 31st of August 2018.

Four new programs are now available in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) thanks to the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) that has graduated over 55 thousand graduates from 106 different countries and currently has over 20 thousand students. Applications for the 2018-2019 Academic Year Fall Semester are now being accepted for the postgraduate programs Diplomacy and Conflict Management, General Psychology, Human Resources Management and Tourism Management (Turkish) that have been approved by the Higher Education Planning, Accreditation and Coordination Council as well as the Republic of Turkey

Council of Higher Education. According to the statement released by the EMU Institute of Graduate Studies and Research students with an undergraduate diploma can apply for the new postgraduate programs by the 15th of September 2018 from the website http://grad.emu.edu.tr.

New Programs With and Without Theses

The “Diplomacy and Conflict Management” English postgraduate program with a thesis offered by the EMU Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Political Science and International Relations is comprised of 7 courses, a seminar course and a thesis. It includes a range

of disciplines such as International Law and Global Management in a theoretical as well as practical framework. The program produces knowledge and skill required for careers such as local intermediator or relating to international human aid and peace-building organizations. The program also establishes useful local, regional and global connections for students participating in the program. The “Human Resources Management” English postgraduate program without a thesis offered by the EMU Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Business Administration is comprised of ten courses and a project. The program

aims to educate knowledgeable, well equipped and well-trained personnel, in the fundamentals and especially the human resources aspect of business to work in a global environment. The “Tourism Management” Turkish postgraduate program offered by the EMU Faculty of Tourism is comprised of 7 courses, a seminar course and a thesis. The program prepared in collaboration with the tourism industry aims to equip students to become leading academicians and managers in the sector. The “General Psychology” Turkish postgraduate program with a thesis comprises of 7 courses, a seminar course and a thesis. Students will receive their education and prepare their theses based on the module they select out of a possible three modules. The modules will represent the three sub fields of psychology Social, Developmental and Cognitive Psychology whilst also allowing prospective graduates to continue their education at doctorate level and earn the title “Expert Psychologist” Extensive information about all postgraduate and doctorate programs offered by EMU, documents needed for application and university fees can be obtained from the EMU Institute of Graduate Studies and Research website http://grad.emu.edu.tr.
