Excavations and Restorations at Perge in 2010 were car- ried out from July 15th to September 8th by the Center for Archaeological Research in Antalya Region with the per- mission issued by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism*.
Work in the 2010 campaign can be grouped under three headings:
Western Necropolis
Excavations at the Western Necropolis were carried out in two main areas. The first is Lot 169, owned by a pri- vate person and, unfortunately, still not expropriated.
This lot has been under systematic excavation since 1997 and contains a rich variety and high number of tombs.
The second area of excavation is Lot 159 located about 500 m. south of the west city gate.
Cleaning and excavation work at Lot 169 was aimed at rectifying the damage caused by the heavy rainfall and flooding of December, 2009, when a mass of earth on top of the south peribolos wall of M9, flowed into the courtyard of the tomb and west peribolos wall, causing the north-south wall, to its south, to partially collapse.
Preventive measures were necessary for any future natu- ral catastrophes. First, the accumulation of earth in the southwest of M9, due to flooding, was removed. In order to prevent any further damage caused by accumulations during future flooding, and also to inspect the presence of any other tombs to the south M9, a trench of 4x4 m.
was excavated right before the south peribolos wall. At
* Our excavation was financed by General Directorate of Cul- tural Heritage and Museums of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, DÖSİMM and the Istanbul University Administrative Secretariat for Scientific Research. In addition, the Turkish Historical Society, Vehbi Koç Foundation’s Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Institute on Mediterranean Civilizations (AKMED), the Cultural Awareness Foundation, and Association of Turk- ish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB) contributed. I would like to express our gratitude on behalf of the Perge excavation team to all these institutions and their directors.

dir. Yapının çizimi yapılmış, fotoğraflanarak kapatılmıştır.
Batı Nekropolis Parsel 159’daki çalışmalar güney açma
da sürdürülmüş (Plan 1), 2009 sezonundan varlığı bilinen mezar sıralarını ortaya çıkarmak amacıyla
-0.50 m., a black layer, extending in the east-west direc- tion, was uncovered. The layer contained numerous shards of thick-walled grey black ceramics, bones and carbonized wood fragments, as well as metal and glass slag. No tomb architecture, sarcophagus or architectural remains were identified in this trench.
As a further measures to prevent flood damage, another drainage channel, in the north-south direction to the east of the fence was dug and joined with east-west channels, running to the north and south of the fence. In addition, drainage channels inside the trench were cleaned and repaired.
A notice was made for the discovery of a sarcophagus in Lot 2977, located to the northwest of Lot 169, and to the west of the road to Yurtpınar. It was determined to exca- vate a sounding there. As the level was lowered, the upper parts revealed numerous fragments of marble sarcophagi, all of which were documented and taken to the excavation’s storerooms. In the east part of the sounding, a wall started to appear at -0.70 m. and later, a podium, adjoining the wall, at -0.80 m., was also found. Excavation was continued down to -1.20 m. level and two phases were identified in the preserved struc- ture. Architectural features and fragments of sarcophagi indicated a podium-type monumental tomb structure. Its date in the Roman Imperial period was inferred from its context. Drawings were made, photographs were taken, and then covered with earth again.
Work in Lot 159 continued in the south trench (Plan 1) focusing, in the west part, to expose the rows of tombs whose existence were recorded in the 2009 campaign.
This year’s work revealed five ostotheks (Os.06, Os.07, Os.08, Os.09, Os.10), three cremation burials (Kr.04,

They all had been placed within terracotta vessels, having round bellies tapering toward the bottom. Similar vessels were also uncovered in Lot 159. Sarcophagi and ostotheks, except for Os.10 which is of marble, were all of lime- stone, and all had a rectangular basin with a pitched roof and with (L99, L100) or without (L94, L95, L96, L97, L98) acroteria. All were of a local type. Only sarcopha- gus L99 had an eight-line inscription in ancient Greek on its east short side. Only two ostotheks (Os.06 and Os.09) and one sarcophagus (L95) had not been robbed (Figs. 1-2).
In the course of the excavations, Sagalassos ware and cut bones were not uncovered as extensively as in 2006 and 2007. However, fragments of cooking ware, amphorae and unguentaria increased significantly in quantity.
Following the excavation, the entire area was photo- graphed, and plans, with elevations and cross-sections of tombs were drawn.
Colonnaded Street
Excavations concentrated in the previously unexcavated northwest quadrant of the crossroads and, particularly around the structure thought to be a fountain. The east- west sewage channel, identified in 2009, was cleaned again and left exposed, and a female head of marble was found. Work progressed northward along the east façade of a potential fountain structure, uncovering various Res. 1 Batı Nekropolis, Parsel 159, 2010 kazısıyla açığa çıkan ostothekler

na ait olduğu düşünülen, bu alınlığın iç kısmında;
statue fragments, including a limestone Herme in a local style, an inscribed statue base along with half a pediment possibly belonging to the fountain. In a floor of burnt filling, was a bronze appliqué relief of a middle-aged man with beard and curly hair, the appliqué and frag- ments, were of high quality workmanship (Fig. 3).
Progressing further north, directly north of the late period wall in the east-west direction, was the corner block belonging to a broken-pediment of limestone. On the exterior of this pediment, thought to belong to the foun- tain’s structure is a relief bust of Helios with a radiating crown and wearing a mantle; on the front side is a winged triton blowing a canorus and holding a rudder in his left hand (Figs. 4-5).

Buradaki kazı çalışmaları sonucunda; 4 no.’lu mekânın güneyindeki 5 no.’lu mekânın 6.20x4.50 m.
me levhaları ve mozaik döşemeyle kaplandığı tespit edilmiştir. Kuzey, doğu ve güneyde yerel kireçtaşı
to the northeast of the entryway to the structure, was a bronze relief variation of the Drunken Dionysos and Satyros statue group; the Dionysos and the arm of Satyros putting his arm around the deity’s shoulder have been preserved.
There were extensive statue fragments uncovered before the possible east entryway of the potential fountain. A marble female head, possibly belonging to Isis or a priestess of Isis (Fig. 6), and an idealized female head of marble, almost preserved in its entirety, and possibly of Aphrodite, were uncovered here. Excavating around the first postament after the crossroads and in the west gal- lery, were two parallel walls built with rubble and brick, extending in the north-south direction, and directly to the north of the potential fountain (Fig. 7). The better preserved northern wall contained a porphyry head, reused in its upper part. The head had been divided into two longitudinally sections, using a chisel so it could be used a wall. It likely belonged to an archaizing Dionysos Herme from the Roman period. Numerous fragments belonging to almost intact unguentaria were also uncov- ered in this area.
Building Z
Building Z located in the first western insula of the north- south main street of Perge, was first excavated in the campaign of 2008 with work continuing this year in the south of room 4. 5 no.’lu mekândaki kazının tamamlanmasından sonra, çalışmalara batısındaki alanda devam edilmiştir. Bu kazıların amacı; 34 no.’lu mekânların batı sınırını oluş
access to the west gallery of the north-south colonnaded street excavations were also to determine their architec- tural connection with the surrounding area, thus clarify- ing the function of the structure.
As a result of the work here, it was noted room 5, locat- ed to the south of room 4, measured 6.20x4.50 m.
inside. It is a north-south rectangle with its floor paved in opus sectile, terracotta plaques, and mosaic. The walls were built with limestone blocks on the north, east and south sides, and are preserved to a height of three courses. The western wall was built with reused, finely cut limestone blocks, rubble and brick.
Following the completion of excavation inside the room 5, work continued to its west. Excavations here hoped to expose the extension of a north-south stylobate forming the west border of rooms 3 and 4, and exposing its west wall clarification of the in situ situation of Doric columns in the same western axis as south wall of room 5, show- ing an east/west direction was also attempted.
Anthropological Studies
A team of three, led by Prof. Dr. Y. S. Erdal, studied skel- etons belonging to at least 100 individuals uncovered in the graves excavated in 2009, 2008 and 1997. Thirty women and 34 men were identified. Infants under the age of 2.5 years, including two fetuses, were eight, while children of ages between 2.5 to 15 were 11 in number.
Eleven individuals had been cremated. An overall analy- sis showed that infants and children were few, with individuals, under age of 15 constituting 27% of adults among inhumation burials. However, when one consid- ers that multiple burial, in the same sarcophagus, can cause worse deterioration in skeletons of adults, it should be considered that skeletons belonging to infants and children may not have survived at all. On the other hand, if one notes children are relatively fewer in number and middle aged and old adults are higher in number, then this may indicate a low death rate among children and young adults. Traumas, identified on the individuals from the sarcophagi, were caused mainly by falling or crash- ing, and almost all appeared to have been healed. This might be taken as a sign of a peaceful society. Non- specific infections on adults had healed but were active- ly followed, particularly on fetuses. Specific infected lesions suggesting syphilis and bejel were also identified in this group, though very low in number. An overall comment on the individuals studied in 2010 would show the health pattern was relatively good, considering their fatality and pathological data.

Protection, Repair and Arrangement Works
Within the frame of anastylosis and arrangement work, donations through “Erect a column: Saving Perge” cam- paign launched together with the Cultural Awareness Foundation, paved the way for erecting 30 columns of granite or marble in an area directly to the north of monument P1 in the colonnaded street, in the west and east widened galleries, and in the area up to the crossroads.
Conservation of chamber tombs M9 in Lot 169 in west necropolis was started under the direction of conservator Ş. Yeşil-Erdek by cleaning the tomb structure, since earth had accumulated in the courtyard and the building had filled with water. Determination of the deterioration level caused by this flooding was also a priority. No deteriora- tion was noted on the wall painting in burial chamber 2;
mosaic floors in chambers 1 and 2 were cleaned; mosa- ic floorings in the courtyard and on upper floors were exposed, checked, cleaned and then re-covered with geo-textile and creek sand.
No deterioration was noted on the wall paintings, restored in 1998, inside tomb M1 in the west necropolis.
About 2 sq. m. of wall paintings, extending upward from the beginning of the vault, excluded from the previous restoration program, and the wall paintings on the exte- rior of the structure were conserved by Ş. Yeşil-Erdek, yielding very appreciative results with regards to aesthet- ics and conservation. Figures and designs not discernible beforehand are now clearly seen.
The metal corrugated roof in Lot 159 in west necropolis was extended southward to cover the newly exposed tombs.
Mosaic and opus sectile pavements of the south baths and macellum had been stabilized and covered with geotextile and creek sand in previous campaigns; the sand layer was replenished where it was diminished by traffic on the visitors’ routes along the mosaic pavements in the colonnaded street Building Z was temporarily pro- tected with a layer of sand as its conservation process has not begun.
In the course of consolidation work, initiated on the western tower of the Hellenistic city gate by tender awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, blocks, fallen from the tower and scattered around the porticus of the south baths, were numbered according to a grid system, then documented with drawings and photogra- phy, and then removed for classification purposes.
Under the blocks was a very high quality head belonging to the colossal statue of the Emperor Lucius Verus.
