Abstract

A review with 8 refs., is given on besifloxacin as a new fluoroquinolone drug for the treatment of conjunctivitis.

Besifloxacin is a topical ophthalmic agent with broad antibacterial spectrum for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. Besifloxacin is generally equiv. to or better than other fluoroquinolones in activity against most gram-pos. and gram-neg. pathogens, and anaerobes. Besifloxacin is active against fluoroquinolones-resistant bacteria. Besifloxacin also inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines in human with bacterial conjunctivitis. In pharmacokinetic studies, besifloxacin can rapidly penetrate into ocular tissues and is sustained in a long time after a single topical dose of besifloxacin ophthalmic suspension. Recent progress in bioactivity, pharmacokinetics, and study of besifloxacin was briefly reviewed in this paper. Indexing Pharmacology (Section 1-0) Concepts Conjunctivitis Human Pharmacokinetics
