MACHINE TRANSLATION –YES or NO

• This text is about the machine translation systems which were used as digital dictionaries. They were popular during 90’s.

• They were valuable in the absence of modern translators like ‘google translate’ or any software based dictionary.

• Even some newspapers were distributing them to their readers in return for coupons which were a small part of newspaper related to campaign and it could be taken by scissor by the reader.

• During their most popular days the price was starting from $100 to

$100000 or even more.

• The discussion from now on will continue like we were to live on those days in which they were in their most popular days.

• The question is, “Is the machine translation (MT) system going to be good or not?

• MT systems do not actually translate: they merely help translators to

translate.

• There are very expensive systems, but even they will come out with

something that would need to be checked and corrected. Otherwise, the translation will be nothing but laughable stuff.

• They may be confused when they were to meet homonymous words.

• When human translators see homonymous words, they do not have any problems at all.

• Related to this problem, artificial intelligence (AI) becomes the tool used for translating.

• So far, all machine-translated texts have had to be extensively post-edited by experienced translators.

• Although the MT manufacturers keep advertising that their machines are “a 100% increase in translation speed”, scepticism remains.

• Nevertheless, scientists will not give up and put hard work into improving them and reach the excellence.

• Therefore, good human translators produce good translations while all MT systems produce bad translations for now!

• Although properly designed and integrated MT systems really ought to

help and enhance the translator’s life.
