ABSTRACT The Effect of Folk Songs on the Academic Success inethTeaching of Social Studies %g/h&(.%XUFX Master of Arts, Department of Social Studies Educati on. 7KHVLV$GYLVRU3URI'UùHILND May 2008 This study aims at determining the effect of folk songs on the academic success in the teaching of social studies. The importance of folk songs as cultural heritage and the necessity of transferring this heritage of cultural values and customs to new generations via folk songs are highlighted in this study. This study is realized by making use of the experimen tal design model. For collecting data, success test and student opinion survey are Measurement used. th instruments are applied to 40 students of -year 8 in NamÕ k Kemal Elementary. School in thedankaya district of Ankara . In the analysis of the sub -problems of study the frequency, percentage and arithmetic mean values were handled by using Mann Whitney U-Test and Wilcoxon signed rank test. The symptoms of the res earch proves thatthere is a remarkable difference between pre -test and post -test markingsfor the XQLW ³<D k O <D øVWLNO gOP´ among the experimentgroup students who joined the study. The observed difference is in favor of post-test markings. According tothe results, it can besaid that the education supported withfolk songs had a considerableeffect on increasing the success of students atWKHXQLWRI³<DøVWLNO k O<DgOP´. According to the symptoms of research, the -WHVW post PDUNLQJV RI øVWLNO k l <D gOP´ nit has aXremarkable difference among ht e experiment and control group students.Considering therank average it can be understood from the WHDFKLQJRIWKHXQLWRI³<DøVWLNO k O<DgOP´WKDWWKH experimentgroup students who were appliedthe education method supported with folk songs had a greater success in comparison withthe control group students who were applied traditional education methods. In terms of this result, it can be said that education method supported with folk songsis effective to increase the success of the student..
